Terry Fox Humanitarian Award

Criteria

To be considered for the Award, applicants must meet be In good academic standing, Canadian citizens or landed immigrants., graduating from secondary (high) school , involved in voluntary humanitarian activities (for which they have not been compensated), planning to or are already studying towards their first university degree or diploma at a Canadian post-secondary institution. Recipients must maintain satisfactory academic standing and a standard of humanitarian work and personal conduct which, in the opinion of the Board of Directors, justifies the award.

Value

up to $28,000 over 4 years.

Note: Recipients of the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award may not receive more than $15,000 in total scholarships annually (including the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award). If a student’s awards exceed this amount, any excess will be deducted from the student’s Terry Fox Award.

“Applicants must provide three (3) referees and upload online an (un)official transcript detailing the applicant’s last two years of schooling (official transcripts, sealed by the issuing institution will be requested from applicants who are selected for an interview). Referees will be emailed a link requesting they complete an online Referee Form on behalf of the applicant.”

Beedie BUILD Scholarship

Criteria

The vision for the Beedie BUILD scholarship program is to create a pathway for aspiring students to begin their journey toward a rewarding career in the skilled trades to address the critical skills gap in B.C.’s growing economy.

Beedie RISE Awards

Criteria

Beedie Luminaries has created the The Refugee & Immigrant Student Education (RISE) Awards which  have the potential to transform the lives of its recipients and enrich the communities we live in, and ultimately create a new generation of conscientious, caring and engaged Canadian leaders. Eligibilty requirements can be found at site below but it is intended for a refugee who was granted permanent residency or a protected person under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) after January 1, 2016, residing full-time in BC for the previous 6 consecutive months.

Criteria

The SHINE (Soaring Higher IN Education) scholarship helps remove financial barriers to higher education and provides wrap-around support for resilient high-school graduates. SHINE supports students to rise above their circumstances and achieve their dreams.

Kemper Human Right Education Foundation

Criteria

This year the Kemper Human Rights Education Foundation (khref.org) is offering prizes of $5000, $2500, and $1,250. Please correct.to high school students judged to have written the best answers to the question on the flyer below (and attached as a readily reproducible file).  Please inform your students about the contest described by the flyer and encourage them to participate in it. More information about KHREF and the essays of the winners of its contests over the past 20 years may be found on khref.org.

Essay Question:

How are leaders in your country and/or other countries undermining or promoting human rights? Refer to specific policies and actions to support your view.

Procedure

1. Essays are due on or before December 10, 2025. (Human Rights Day),
2.  Essays should be approximately 2500 words in length and be submitted as a Microsoft Word attachment to: kemperhumanrights@gmail.comor by regular mail to: KHREF, 184 Fillow Street, Norwalk, CT 06850.
3. Via footnotes and a bibliography indicate the names, titles, year of publication, and page numbers for all references on which it is based,
4. Include a cover page with:  i. the title, ii. author’s name and grade level, ii. name and address of author’s high school, iii.  name of a teacher at the high school and iv. the following statement signed by the teacher: “I teacher’s name, a teacher of [subject] at [name of the essay author’s school] am aware of [author’s name] participation in KHREF essay contest and to the best of my knowledge the essay [s/he] submitted represents [her/his] independent work, iv. the following statement signed by the essay’s author:   My essay is based on the research cited in its footnotes and bibliography and represents my own thoughts on the subject and prior to receiving a prize I agree to participate in a Zoom interview with members of KHREF’s board regarding my essay and, v. the following statement signed by the essay’s author and essay author’s parent or guardian: “I give the Kemper Human Rights Education Foundation permission to publish this essay.”
