BCIT Pathways to Success Awards

Criteria

Students must have applied to a full time first year technology, technical studies, or trade program (excluding Apprentice) and have a BCIT student number before being considered for an award. Selection is based on demonstrated leadership skills and/or additional responsibilities. Examples are: Leadership training/courses, volunteer and/or community service, work experience, captain/president of sports team or group, involvement in extracurricular activities, plays a major role in supporting their family, financially or otherwise

Procedure

Pick up an application package from the Scholarship bin in student services  in February or download a pdf version below. All documents including application, personal statement, letter of recommendation, and copy of school transcript combined as one PDF are due to Ms. Mihic by email or  in STUDENT SERVICES by MARCH 10  before 3pm.

Jayson McLean Memorial Bursary

Criteria

Jayson enjoyed mentoring young students who had a love for Theatre. He wanted them to reach their potential and success in their lives through the Arts, just as he did.  To commemorate Jayson’s dedication to the Arts in his life, we are establishing a Bursary in his name for future Arts students in the Burnaby School District (41), who are pursuing their artistic passions in life.

Intended for students in Theatrical Arts, looking to continue study in post-secondary in a Theatrical Arts related field.

$500 to a Burnaby School District student

Chad Turpin Scholarship (provided by BASES)

Criteria

The Burnaby Association of Senior Exempt Employees (BASES) is pleased to be award The Chad Turpin Scholarship – One (1) scholarship in the amount of $2000 will be awarded to a student who: 

  • Maintained a good academic standing 
  • Is interested in pursuing a career in public administration, public policy or public service  
  • Demonstrates a need for financial assistance to pursue their education, for example, a student that must secure employment while attending school.  

  The recipient(s) will be required to provide proof of enrollment in a qualified program in order to receive their scholarship payment.   

NoteOne of the above scholarships will be awarded to a student who is pursuing academic education at a college or university and the other will be awarded to a student who is pursuing vocational training program at a designated post-secondary technical, trades or vocational institute.

City of Burnaby Bursary Award Program

Criteria
  • Be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of the City of Burnaby;
  • Be in Grade 12 and eligible to graduate (within the year of application) from a public secondary school in Burnaby’s School District
  • Be accepted to a program of studies at a post-secondary institution in Canada, such as universities, community colleges, technical schools – proof of registration in a minimum of three courses in a post-secondary institution shall be required before any bursary award payment is made to a recipient
  • Preference will be given to a student who has participated in a community program prior to graduating and can demonstrate outstanding community involvement and volunteerism; and,
  • Students who demonstrate financial need (family income below $50,000) will be given priority.

These forms must be in to Ms. Mihic by Friday, March 10.  The school can nominate up to 3 applicant whereupon the City of Burnaby will select a successful applicant and inform them and the school.

Burnaby Art Council Scholarship

Criteria

The Burnaby Arts Council is offering one ARTS scholarship to a graduating student in each of Burnaby’s eight secondary schools.

Applicants must:
a) demonstrate excellence and achievement in the arts (performing, visual or literary) in school curricular and extra-curricular programs and the motivation to develop their ability. Additional consideration will be given for community involvement.
b) exhibit a good academic record with letters of commendation.
c) be continuing with their education in a full-time accredited post-secondary program, with a concentration in the arts, leading to a professional status in theatre, dance, visual arts, creative writing or music.
d) consideration may be given to students with financial need. The Burnaby Arts Council reserves the right to grant scholarships only if suitable candidates are found.

Burnaby South War Memorial Scholarship

Criteria

In recognition and memory of the young men and women from Burnaby who fought for Canada in World War II.

The Burnaby South War Memorial bursaries are awarded annually to two deserving Burnaby secondary school graduates who have continually demonstrated the values associated with good citizenship – caring, sharing, responsibility and a willingness to help others.

· statement explaining your need for financial assistance – Burnaby South War Memorial Bursary only.

· resume – these awards emphasize service to the school and community so focus on these areas in your resume.

· copy of both your grade 11 & 12 transcripts (request one from ).

· MINIMUM of two reference letters that support your community and school service. This is a crucial part of your application and MUST be included. If you state volunteer activities in your application, make every effort to include some documentation in the form of a letter, certificate, etc. to provide evidence of your involvement as well as the duration of your involvement.

CUPE Local 23 Scholarship

Criteria

The CUPE Local 23 scholarship is awarded to one student in each of Burnaby’s secondary schools who meets the following criteria:

The scholarship will be awarded to a student who has:
▪ Maintained a good academic standing
▪ Demonstrated good citizenship in school and the community
▪ Participated in volunteer activities

Scholarship will be awarded to a student who is going on to a BC post secondaryor vocational training program. Consideration should be given to a student with financial need.

Burnaby Sport Hall of Fame Scholarship

Criteria

The Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame was formed in 2001 to honour Burnaby’s past athletic excellence.

  • A graduating Grade 12 student enrolled at a B.C. secondary school (public or private). Priority will be given to those attending school in Burnaby
  •  A resident of Burnaby for at least the past three years
  •  Future plans to attend a post-secondary institution on a full-time basis
  • Show evidence of high athletic ability and performance
  • Maintain minimum C+ average (copy of the most recent transcript must be included)
  • Demonstrated leadership
  • Be active in school and community
Value

$1,000 scholarships to a male athlete and a female athlete from Burnaby.

Michael J. Fox Theatre Visual and Performing Arts Scholarships

Criteria

Each year, the Michael J. Fox Theatre Society selects graduating Burnaby School District (SD41) students who have demonstrated exemplary aptitude for the Arts as recipients of the Michael J. Fox Theatre Visual and Performing Arts Scholarship.

Scholarships will be awarded at the discretion of the selection committee based on the
following criteria:

  • Demonstrated interest, dedication and aptitude in an arts or in multiple arts disciplines, e.g. dance, drama, music, visual arts, theatre, script writing, stagecraft, directing, media arts
  • History of school and/or community volunteering
  • Additional consideration will be given to students who face financial adversity pursuing their chosen post-secondary program

Applicants to the Michael J. Fox Theatre Visual and Performing Arts Scholarship must be:

  • a student graduating from a Burnaby School District (SD41) secondary school at the end
    of the 2022-2023  school year.
  • enrolled in a visual or performing arts course in a Burnaby (SD41) secondary school for the 2022-2023 school year.
  • pursuing a post-secondary Degree or Certificate in an Arts discipline.
  • a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident.

Procedure

  •  Three (3) reference letters, including one from a teacher of the Visual and Performing Arts in your school
  • a Digital Portfolio
    • Include up to four samples from your portfolio or a maximum 5-minute audio or
      video compilation
    • Please access the form to upload audition/portfolio materials through the QR
      code below. You must use your Burnaby School District Credentials to access
      form (e.g. e12345@burnabyschools.ca and your regular District e-mail
      password).

Rotary Club Adventures in Citizenship

Criteria

This is a fully funded opportunity for Burnaby youths to attend a leadership workshop in Ottawa, Ontario and:

➢ Experience what it means to be Canadian
➢ Learn how our government works
➢ Gain an understanding of our country
➢ Meet leaders and decision makers
➢ Engage with young Canadians from every province

To qualify you must:
• Be between 16 and 18 (at the time of program)
• Have excellent academic standing
• Be involved in Community Service with an emphasis on non-school related volunteering
• Have leadership abilities
• Be a Canadian citizen or have Landed Immigrant Status
Be able to go to Ottawa from May 14 – 17, 2023
• Attend an interview with a panel of Rotarians – to be scheduled at the start of February

• Write a short essay (approx. 250 words) or film a 60-90 second video on the topic:
“What Being a Canadian means to Me”
