Burnaby Teachers’ Association Scholarship

Criteria

The Burnaby Teachers’ Association is awarding 2 scholarships to students on the basis of:

  • scholarship, citizenship, and need.
  • That the scholarship be paid when the recipient enters full-time attendance at a post-secondary school. Part-time attendance may be approved after Executive Council review.
  • each recipent be a student in a Burnaby school for at least one year.

Students have up to five years to register for post-secondary and claim the award.

2 x $750

Complete applications  below and submit to due to Ms. Mihic  by email or in print by 3pm that day. Late applications will NOT be accepted.

Burnaby Sport Hall of Fame Scholarship

Criteria

The Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame was formed in 2001 to honour Burnaby’s past athletic excellence.

  • A graduating Grade 12 student enrolled at a B.C. secondary school (public or private). Priority will be given to those attending school in Burnaby
  •  A resident of Burnaby for at least the past three years
  •  Future plans to attend a post-secondary institution on a full-time basis
  • Show evidence of high athletic ability and performance
  • Maintain minimum C+ average (copy of the most recent transcript must be included)
  • Demonstrated leadership
  • Be active in school and community
Value

$1,000 scholarships to a male athlete and a female athlete from Burnaby.

Complete and mail the following to the address below:

  1. Application (attached below and extra copies can be found in “Scholarship Application” Bin outside Student Services
  2. A cover letter summarizing your athletic achievements along with your postsecondary athletic/academic goals and plans must be included with your application.

Michael J. Fox Theatre Visual and Performing Arts Scholarships

Criteria

Each year, the Michael J. Fox Theatre Society selects graduating Burnaby School District (SD41) students who have demonstrated exemplary aptitude for the Arts as recipients of the Michael J. Fox Theatre Visual and Performing Arts Scholarship.

Scholarships will be awarded at the discretion of the selection committee based on the
following criteria:

  • Demonstrated interest, dedication and aptitude in an arts or in multiple arts disciplines, e.g. dance, drama, music, visual arts, theatre, script writing, stagecraft, directing, media arts
  • History of school and/or community volunteering
  • Additional consideration will be given to students who face financial adversity pursuing their chosen post-secondary program

Applicants to the Michael J. Fox Theatre Visual and Performing Arts Scholarship must be:

  • a student graduating from a Burnaby School District (SD41) secondary school at the end
    of the 2021-2022 school year.
  • enrolled in a visual or performing arts course in a Burnaby (SD41) secondary school for the 2021-2022 school year.
  • pursuing a post-secondary Degree or Certificate in an Arts discipline.
  • a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident.

Procedure

Completed Applications Packages must include:

  • Your completed Student Application Form
  • Short Essay Responses (Instructions in Application Form)
  • Your secondary school transcript
  •  A summary of your school and/or community volunteer activities
  •  Three (3) reference letters, including one from a teacher of the Visual and Performing Arts in your school
  • a Digital Portfolio
    • Include up to four samples from your portfolio or a maximum 5-minute audio or
      video compilation
    • Please access the form to upload audition/portfolio materials through the QR
      code below. You must use your Burnaby School District Credentials to access
      form (e.g. e12345@burnabyschools.ca and your regular District e-mail
      password).

City of Burnaby Bursary Award Program

Criteria
  • Be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of the City of Burnaby;
  • Be in Grade 12 and eligible to graduate (within the year of application) from a public secondary school in Burnaby’s School District
  • Be accepted to a program of studies at a post-secondary institution in Canada, such as universities, community colleges, technical schools – proof of registration in a minimum of three courses in a post-secondary institution shall be required before any bursary award payment is made to a recipient
  • Preference will be given to a student who has participated in a community program prior to graduating and can demonstrate outstanding community involvement and volunteerism; and,
  • Students who demonstrate financial need (family income below $50,000) will be given priority.

$1,000 to a BNSS student (each school gets one)

Completed applications  to Ms. Mihic in Student Services or by email by 3pm  March 11, 2022. Recipients will be informed after a City Hall meeting sometime in May or June. 

Procedure

Download and complete fillable pdf below  or pick up a paper application in Scholarship Applications folder by Student Services entrance. These forms must be in to Ms. Mihic by Friday, March 11 .  The school can nominate up to 3 applicant whereupon the City of Burnaby will select a successful applicant and inform them and the school.

Coast Capital Savings Youth Education Awards

Criteria

Coast Capital’s Standing Tall Awards support youth who have faced adversity and have not only risen up against the odds, but are demonstrating a commitment to continue their education. This award is open to students who have faced challenges like poverty, health issues, family issues, personal loss, or lack of supports (for example, youth who are, or who have been, in government care).

Coast Capital is committed to improving access to post-secondary education for equity-seeking young people in racialized communities, including Indigenous, Black, and People of Colour (IBPOC). Therefore, a minimum of 30% of our awards will be directed to IBPOC students.

Rotary Club of Burnaby – Deer Lake Community Leadership Scholarship 2022

Criteria

This scholarship is awarded annually to a well-rounded student who has demonstrated strong citizenship and leadership skills as demonstrated through voluntary participation in community and school activities. The scholarship shall be applicable towards postsecondary education or trades training at any approved institution.

To be considered for this scholarship, applicant students should have:
➢ demonstrated good citizenship and strong leadership skills.
➢ been actively involved in community service and / or volunteer work.
➢ been actively involved in youth initiatives, activities and events in the Burnaby
community.
➢ been actively involved in school-based activities; and
➢ actively pursuing relevant school coursework.

Value

A scholarship of $1000 will be awarded to a Senior Secondary student in the Burnaby School District. Funds will be administered through the Rotary Club of Burnaby – Deer Lake.

Direct mail or email by APRIL 15th, 2022

In order to be eligible for consideration:

  1.  A student must complete a personal application; or
  2. A staff member at the student’s school must submit a nomination form.

Parkcrest Children’s Centre Scholarship

Criteria

The scholarship is awarded to a past student of Parkcrest Children’s Centre who is a well-rounded student who, while maintaining a good academic standing, has participated in school and community activities.

To be considered for the award the student must have:

  •  proof of attendance at Parkcrest Childcare Society (Parkcrest Children’s Centre) for a period of at least one year
  • been enrolled in a Burnaby school for the two (2) senior years
  • provided evidence of volunteer or work experience, including letters of reference attesting to the student’s work ethic
  • been actively involved in community service and/or volunteer work
  • demonstrated good citizenship and leadership skills
  • maintained a good academic standing

Note: The scholarship monies will be paid to the recipient upon proof of registration in a post secondary institution. The recipient must be registered in a post secondary institution within 18 months of their secondary school graduation or the award will expire.

Value

$1000  to  one Burnaby Student who meets the above criteria. Must provide proof of supporting documents and other pertinent information.

Ted Elphick Bursary

Criteria

In recognition and memory of Ted Elphick, a dedicated educator whose leadership and contribution to the education of challenged students provided a professional legacy for which the Burnaby School District can be proud and thankful.

The Ted Elphick Memorial bursary is awarded annually to a Burnaby resident who has, through positive will and spirit, overcome physical or mental challenges to graduate from a Burnaby secondary school. To be considered for the bursary the student should have:

  • been enrolled in a Burnaby school for five years
  • demonstrated ability and a desire to be a life long learner and continue his or her education at a post secondary institution or in a recognized training program

Burnaby Art Council Scholarship

Criteria

The Burnaby Arts Council is offering one ARTS scholarship to a graduating student in each of Burnaby’s eight secondary schools.

Applicants must:
a) demonstrate excellence and achievement in the arts (performing, visual or literary) in school curricular and extra-curricular programs and the motivation to develop their ability. Additional consideration will be given for community involvement.
b) exhibit a good academic record with letters of commendation.
c) be continuing with their education in a full-time accredited post-secondary program, with a concentration in the arts, leading to a professional status in theatre, dance, visual arts, creative writing or music.
d) consideration may be given to students with financial need. The Burnaby Arts Council reserves the right to grant scholarships only if suitable candidates are found.

Burnaby South War Memorial Scholarship

Criteria

In recognition and memory of the young men and women from Burnaby who fought for Canada in World War II

The Burnaby South War Memorial bursaries are awarded annually to two deserving Burnaby secondary school graduates who have continually demonstrated the values associated with good citizenship – caring, sharing, responsibility and a willingness to help others.

To be considered for a bursary a student must:

  •  be a Canadian citizen and have graduated from a School District 41 secondary school;
  • have the desire to continue his/her education at a post secondary institution in Canada and have been accepted to attend a post secondary institution;
  • have been nominated for the award by the staff of the school.
