Queen’s University Awards

*** Note: You must be applying and intending to enroll to Queen’s University to qualify for these awards***

Chancellor’s Scholarship

*We can nominate ONE OR TWO Burnaby North students.*

Criteria:

Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada who has applied for, or is in the process of applying for, admission to Queen’s University to be eligible for this award.  Excellent academic ability (90%+), demonstrated leadership and creativity, involvement in school and community activities.  Requires nomination from the school.

Value:

Queen’s Financial Aid and Awards Profile, Major Admissions Awards, Commitment Scholars Awards, Principal’s Scholarship, – varied; up to $100,000 over 4 years

Chancellor’s Scholarship –   80 @ $40, 000-$100,000 over 4 years

Note: The application is submitted only after you have applied to Queen’s and have set up a SOLUS account at https://www.queensu.ca/studentawards/admission-awards/major-admission-awards. Make sure you meet the criteria and have filled a Student Profile to be considered for the school nomination before FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 30TH . Application and additional criteria must be received by December 8th at Queen’s University.

 

Thiel Fellowship

Criteria

Founded by technology entrepreneur and investor Peter Thiel in 2011, the Thiel Fellowship is a two-year program for young people who want to build new things. Thiel Fellows skip or stop out of college to receive a $100,000 grant and support from the Thiel Foundation’s network of founders, investors, and scientists.

TD Scholarship for Community Leadership (TIME SENSITIVE)

CRITERIA

The TD Scholarship for Community Leadership awards students across Canada who are finishing high school, have demonstrated community leadership and have a minimum of 75% grade average (in grade 11). There is an essay writing component to this scholarship and has an opportunity to provide “extras” for consideration.

VALUE

multiple @  $70, 000 over 4 years ($10,000/yr for tuition; $7,500/yr for living expenses).

DUE DATE

Online by 10 am  October 22.

PROCEDURE

Apply online: https://www.td.com/ca/en/personal-banking/solutions/student-banking/community-leadership-scholarship-for-canadians/. You will need to include two letters of support from community groups, a letter of recommendation by school, and a copy of your transcript. Essay component.

Post-Secondary Entrance Scholarships

Most post-secondary institutions offer some sort of entrance scholarship. For most institutions, all you need to do is apply to the institution; however, read through instructions carefully to see if you need to supply “extras” to be considered for a scholarship. Most institutions do not announce scholarship winners until late in the spring . Check out the list of institutions that have applications now open:

UBC – offers the Presidential Scholars Award (formerly Major Entrance Scholarship) of  a one-time award of approximately $5,000, and renewable awards of up to $80,000 payable over four years. Apply by December 1

SFU – open to domestic and international students and valued  from $10,000 up to an amount sufficient to cover tuition and mandatory supplementary fees. Initial application due December 15th; supporting documents and references due by January 31st. Recipients will be notified from mid-March to mid-May 2024.

BCIT – offers range from $1.000-4,000. Most applications due April 15th.

University of the Fraser Valley – deadline to apply is March 10th. Check site for details.

Capilano University- deadline to apply is March 31st. Range in offers and criteria. Check site for details.

Douglas College – offers a variety of one-time scholarships or awards of up to $3,500, and renewable scholarships or awards of up to $20,000, payable over four years. Deadline to apply is March 1st.

Langara College – deadline to apply is December 15th.  Check site for details.

Kwantlen Polytechnique – TBA

OUT OF PROVINCE SCHOLARSHIPS

University of Toronto – entrance scholarship considerations are considered automatically with application. Check site for additional scholarships. Various deadlines for different programs can be found here.

McGill  University – deadline to apply is February 7th.  Check site for details.

AES Scholarships (TIME SENSITIVE)

Criteria

This scholarship will be awarded on the basis of  character determined by the evaluation of a 500-1000 word essay based on the following question:

When you look back on your life in 30 years, what would it take for you to consider your life successful? What relationships or accomplishments will be important on this journey?

Uggla Family Scholarship

Criteria

Ten scholarships are awarded each year to students who face significant financial barriers to participation in post-secondary education. This may include students who identify as Indigenous, Black, or a person of colour, students living with disabilities, LGBTQIA2S+ students, and students of all gender identities. The intent of the Uggla Family Scholarship is to promote equity and remove historical and existing discrimination, including barriers to full participation in social, cultural, economic and political life.

Available to domestic (Canadian) students admitted for the fall term to any undergraduate degree.

10 x full SFU program costs

You will receive funding for each term of your academic program as long as you meet and maintain scholarship renewal criteria, such as minimum course enrollment, minimum academic standing, and scholars program involvement.

Procedure

The following provides a summary of what you can expect to complete as part of the Uggla Family Scholarship application:

  • A written, short answer on your academic excellence and your intended area of study. (250 words max)
  • A description of your achievements and contributions. (250 words max)
  • A short essay sharing your future goals and how your personal experiences impacted these goals. (750 words max)
  • A Financial Need Assessment, disclosing your parent(s)/guardian(s) gross annual income from 2024, as well as the number of dependents in your household.
  • Two letters of support, each written by someone who is not a family member and who has direct knowledge of the experiences you describe in your application, such as your academics, extra-curricular activities, employment, volunteer, or personal achievements. In lieu of one letter, you may choose to include a supporting document, including but not limited to a certificate of appreciation, media story, or community publication.

Your application materials will be reviewed by members of the admissions department of SFU, as well as members of the Uggla Family and Trustees of the Uggla Family Foundation who reside outside of Canada.
