Mrs. Araujo’s Read Alouds Episode 1!

Hello everyone,

I hope you are well and have enjoyed the sunshine this weekend.  We just came back from a bike ride to Central Park, keeping our physical distance, of course.  It is a beautiful day and I am loving the cherry blossoms.

One of the things I have been missing most is reading aloud books to students in the library.  Two of the “Big Ideas” in our English Language Arts curriculum are:

  • Language and story can be a source of creativity and joy.
  • Through listening and speaking, we connect with others and share our world.

So…I have created my first read aloud video for you to enjoy at home.  Click here to view my read aloud of The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt with pictures by Oliver Jeffers.  Many publishers are relaxing their copyright guidelines during this time and I am grateful to Penguin Random House for providing permission for me to post this video.

I hope this video brings you some joy and helps us connect even though we can’t see other at school.  I will be also posting these videos in the Read Alouds page at the top of the blog.

New Destiny Collections

Hello everyone,

Wow! There has been a lot of information about learning from home to sort through lately.  I have created 2 new Collections in our Destiny Catalogue for Online Reading as well as a collection that includes various activities from your favourite Authors and Illustrators.  I hope you enjoy exploring these Collections!

Please also remember to visit Burnaby Schools new website for families: https://learning.burnabyschools.ca/

As well as the Minitstry of Education’s site https://www.openschool.bc.ca/keeplearning/

Please leave comments below about the collections.  Did you enjoy using the resources? Is there something you think I should add? What was your favourite?

Thanks and stay tuned for more updates from me and the Library!

Welcome back! (sort of)

Hello everyone! I hope you and your family are well and managed to enjoy your Spring Break during these strange times.  Like many of you our family has been trying to find ways to be positive by staying active, staying connected and finding activities we can do at home.  I have been trying to stay informed, but not be overwhelmed.  It has been a challenge.  There is A LOT of information out there and it is important than ever to get your news from reliable and credible sources. One activity that I am always promoting is, of course, reading.  I am sad that the library will not be open tomorrow and I will miss the opportunity to lend you some new books.  If you have lots of books at home, please read and reread.  If you’re looking for something new, here are a few resources you might want to try.

  • Tumblebooks-  a resource from Scholastic that our school district funds and many students are familiar with.  Click on the link on the top right hand side of the blog.
  • WEB RESOURCES- reliable resources to support inquiry of a variety of topics.  Includes World Book, KnowBC, National Geographic and more. Click on the link at the top right on the blog or directly from the school website.  If you need a password, please contact me.  jennifer.araujo@burnabyschools.ca
  • Your Public Library also has many great, free resources. Please read the message below from the Burnaby Public Library

The Canadian Picture Book of the Year is back!

This year we have started reading five amazing Canadian Picture books in the library with many of the primary classes.  Each of these books have been nominated for either the Marilyn Baillie Picture Book Award or the Governor General’s Book Award.  Each week we read one of the books and discuss how it meets the criteria of a great picture book. Some of the questions we ask ourselves include: Does it have beautiful and unique illustrations that grab our attention? Does it touch our heart and help us make connections? Does it change our thinking? Does it make us feel something?

Here are the five nominees:

We will vote for our favourite book just before the winter break.  Stay tuned for the results!

Media Literacy Week

Last week many classes visited the library and participated in Media Literacy Week. We watched a video from Mediasmarts.ca called “House Hippo 2.0”.  Students were asked if they thought it was real or fake.  We talked about “what’s in the frame” and what we can see and can’t see in various kinds of media.  Older classes focused on how to tell what’s true online.  Click here for more information on Media Literacy and Break the Fake resources from MediaSmarts.
