We were honoured today with a wonderful performance by the Kwhlii Gibaygum Nisga’a Dance Group. They shared their stories, songs and dances of their with the whole school. What a perfect way to begin Orange Shirt Day – acknowledging the wrongs of the past and celebrating Indigenous culture.

Fall 2019 Family Storytime in Sign Language and English at Burnaby Public Library

Join a Deaf storyteller and a children’s librarian for stories, rhymes and crafts presented in both American Sign Language and English. This is a free drop-in for children of all ages and abilities together with a parent or caregiver. All families are welcome! Interpreters will be present.
Four Saturdays from 2:00 to 3:00 PM: September 14, October 26, November 9, and December 14, 2019

Our Author Visit
On April 23 we had an amazing author come and visit our school named Faith Erin Hicks! She taught all the intermediate grades about drawing and how her journey to become an author helped develop the person she is today! She taught us amazing tips like what pens can suit you and how to shade different sides of a person’s face to look like the sun’s shining on them. And the biggest tip of all how to become an amazing author like her! She has published many books such as Friends with Boys, Adventures with Superhero Girl and one of her newest comics The Nameless City but there are many more wonderful graphic novels like this done by her. February 2019 News from the Library:
Literacy Week 2019:
We had a wonderful week celebrating literacy in January. We hope you have had the chance to visit our “Response Gallery” to see all the different ways classes responded to our school wide read, Drawn Together. Thank you to all the families who donated books for book swap. We had a lot of fun dressing up as our favourite literary characters.

On Thursday, guest readers and ASL storytellers visited each classroom to share their love of reading. What a fabulous week!
Story Studio:
You may have noticed some changes in the library lately. We have moved around some things and made a special place for students to tell and write stories with a variety of materials and loose parts. It has been an exciting adventure that began with Ms. Shuster and Division 9 visiting the story studio once a week. Now Division 7 is visiting the Story Studio. Using the Story Workshop structure, students are exploring many Big Ideas in Language Arts including: language and story can be a source of creativity and joy.
VR and AR:
This year Mr. Hunter and I are part of a district learning team exploring how using Virtual Reality(VR) and Augmented Reality(AR) can provide experiences for students that allow them to make connections to curricular content and competencies in unique ways. For 2 weeks in February we have a kit of 30 Google Carboard glasses and 30 smartphones we are using with students. Division 5 is using this technology to help their understanding of key science concepts. We are hoping to give as many classes as possible the opportunity to experience these amazing tools for learning.
