The Canadian Picture Book of the Year is back!

This year we have started reading five amazing Canadian Picture books in the library with many of the primary classes.  Each of these books have been nominated for either the Marilyn Baillie Picture Book Award or the Governor General’s Book Award.  Each week we read one of the books and discuss how it meets the criteria of a great picture book. Some of the questions we ask ourselves include: Does it have beautiful and unique illustrations that grab our attention? Does it touch our heart and help us make connections? Does it change our thinking? Does it make us feel something?

Here are the five nominees:

We will vote for our favourite book just before the winter break.  Stay tuned for the results!

Media Literacy Week

Last week many classes visited the library and participated in Media Literacy Week. We watched a video from Mediasmarts.ca called “House Hippo 2.0”.  Students were asked if they thought it was real or fake.  We talked about “what’s in the frame” and what we can see and can’t see in various kinds of media.  Older classes focused on how to tell what’s true online.  Click here for more information on Media Literacy and Break the Fake resources from MediaSmarts.

Orange Shirt Day

We were honoured today with a wonderful performance by the Kwhlii Gibaygum Nisga’a Dance Group. They shared their stories, songs and dances of their with the whole school.  What a perfect way to begin Orange Shirt Day – acknowledging the wrongs of the past and celebrating Indigenous culture.
