Every day for 365 days, as part of the We Believe in Picture Books campaign, Candlewick will offer a video shot by authors, illustrators, staff, and friends, sharing what picture books mean to them, recommending a favorite story, and more….You can also submit your own video to the publisher in which you informally talk about your favorite picture book, what the format means to you, or why it matters.

Library Monitors: Who are they anyway?

The new header on the blog was a photo taken last week in the library for the yearbook. The photograph club came to take photos of our library monitors.

Can you guess who they are?

I know they are dedicated students who help out in the library before and after school with shelving, decorating, displays and more.

Thanks to all of you!

Online Reading with Division 8

Division 8 has been reading online using the links at BPL Hear a Story as well as wegivebooks.org

Last we they voted on their favourite site.  Most of the students like Bookflix which students can use with their BPL cards.  Here is what they wrote:

I liked Bookflix because…

“Someone can read to you and you can read it yourself.  You can also see videos.” Sophia

“It has lots of books and it has non-fiction.” Esther

“You can play games.”

These sites can be accessed at home or at school.  Come and see Mrs. Araujo in the library or talk to someone in Division 8 if you need help!

Pink Day February 29th

Pink Day is February 29th.  Come to the library to check out some great books about bullying and how to stop it.  Remember to be a friend, not a bully.

We Give Books

“We Give Books is a new digital initiative that enables anyone with access to the Internet to put books in the hands of children who don’t have them, simply by reading online.

We Give Books combines the joy of reading with the power of helping others, providing a platform for caregivers and educators to inspire children to become lifelong readers and lifelong givers.

We Give Books also helps some of the world’s best, most inspiring, literacy organizations by spreading the word about their great work and by providing books to the young people these organizations support.” www.wegivebooks.org

Several classes at South Slope/ BCSD have or will be reading books from this site in the library.  The images are excellent and classes have enjoyed being able to see the pictures in large format on the interactive whiteboard. Ask Divisions 6 and 7 about Blue Chicken by Deborah Freedman, a new book in the library that we read online last week.  Division 9 read Henry and the Valentine Surprise by Nancy Carlson.

Click here to go to the site, read a book online and help others, too.

Scholastic Book Fair

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

To all the parents who volunteered at the Scholastic Book Fair.  It was a big success.  All proceeds will go to purchase resources for the library.

YRCA Voting is Complete!

Over 30 students in Divisions 1-5 participated in the Young Reader’s Choice Awards this year.  Students read at least 2 books in the junior and/or intermediate categories and then voted on their favourite.

South Slope’s #1 Choice with 20 votes was Amulet. Book one, The Stonekeeper by Kazu Kibuishi.

I wonder what book will be the winner?
