2 – Capturing Student Voice – Connections to platform

Focus: deconstruct and view the ePortfolio as a teacher, as a student, as a parent.

  • What are the goals of each,
  • How will each voice be equally heard,
  • What might be the process of introducing this to class; to parents,
  • How will you capture and upload stories using different devices,
  • How do we take images that leap off pages to tell a story
  • (hidden one) How will you balance your time and energy
    lighthouse

Part ‘think about‘, part technical, this session served to align goals to technical platform. We should always remember that the bigger goals drive and create the environment (“form follows function”) of dialogue.

We had a chance to play out what a student/teacher/parent would see, feel, do. Workflows were developed (step by step processes) to introduce concepts of learning, feedback. At each of the grade levels, this might look differently. This might include:

  • how do we know we learned something?
  • what evidence would show we worked at a problem?
  • what sequences can we can capture to talk about our learning?
  • what devices can we use to “freeze the moment in time” so we can reflect on it?
  • what steps and resources (eg. devices, pencils, hallways, corners for collaborative dialogue…) do we need in order to make this happen?
  • what do we need to breakdown and separate between the processes of integrating technology and thinking processes?

Parent emails were added to the eportfolios and ids are being generated to allow access to parents. An Instruction Handout was provided to walk through the process of teacher, student, parent.

This was a lot to work through in one session and the morning went quickly. Excitement as this journey takes off.
