Queen’s University Awards

*** Note: You must be applying and intending to enroll to Queen’s University to qualify for these awards***

Chancellor’s Scholarship

*We can nominate ONE OR TWO Burnaby North students.*

Criteria:

Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada who has applied for, or is in the process of applying for, admission to Queen’s University to be eligible for this award.  Excellent academic ability (90%+), demonstrated leadership and creativity, involvement in school and community activities.  Requires nomination from the school.

Value:

Major Entrance Scholarships – varied

Chancellor’s Scholarship –  $36, 000 over 4 years

Bank of Montreal Award – $40,000 over 4 years

Note: Queen’s scholarship application process has changed from previous years. The application is submitted only after you have applied to Queen’s and have set up a SOLUS account at https://www.queensu.ca/studentawards/admission-awards/major-admission-awards. Make sure you meet the criteria and have filled a Student Profile to be considered for the school nomination. Application and additional criteria must be received by December 8th at Queen’s University. Additional info below.

 

 

Kemper Human Rights Education Foundation Essay Contest

Criteria

Open to all students. Essays must include a cover page with the: title of the essay, author’s name, name and address of the high school, name of a teacher or administrator at the high school, author’s grade level, date submitted, and the following statement signed by the author and author’s parent or guardian: “I give the Kemper Human Rights Education Foundation permission to publish this essay.” Essays will be judged according to how clearly and well they answer the question posed and the extent to which they are supported by research.

Value

varies from $2000, $1000, and $500.

Due Date

December 10, 2021 (Human Rights Day).

Procedure

Write 1000-2500 on the following:

Does the distribution of income and wealth in your country and/or between countries violate human rights and if so what can and should be done about it?

1. There are two contests: one for high school students in the U.S. and one for high school students who are citizens and residents of other countries.

2. Essays are due on or before December 10, 2021 (Human Rights Day).

3. Essays should be approximately 2500 words in length and be submitted as a Microsoft Word attachment to: kemperhumanrights@gmail.com or by regular mail to: KHREF, 184 Fillow Street, Norwalk, CT 06850.

4. Essays will be judged according to how clearly and well they answer the question posed and the extent to which they are supported by research.

Cmolik Scholarship

Criteria

Founded in 2008, The Cmolik Foundation helps students across BC access educational opportunities that shape their career aspirations and possibilities with the support of dedicated educators, mentors, sponsors and volunteers. Eligible applicants must:

  • Be a resident of BC
  • Have lived in Canada for a minimum of 7 years
  • Plan to graduate from a BC secondary school
  • Plan to attend and study full time at a post secondary university, college or trade school
  • Be ineligible for the BC Tuition Waiver Program (for former youth in care)
  •  Have experienced adversity or hardship
  • Have exhibited a good work ethic
  • Have demonstrated financial need
  • Evidence of leadership involvement

$40,000 for tuition, books, and living expenses

Due Date

nomination application to Ms. Mihic in Student Services by January 21, 2021 by 3pm (email or paper OK).

due online February 7th, 2021. Successful applicants will be notified in late March or early April.

Procedure

Part 1: DUE January 21, 2022 by 3pm to Ms Mihic:

200-250 written response describing evidence of:

  •  adversity or hardship
  • good work ethic
  •  financial need
  •  leadership involvement

Part 2: DUE FEBRUARY 7th 2022 online IF NOMINATED from Part 1:

  • application form
  • 2 references (1 should be a teacher)
  • official transcript or most recent report card
  • current photograph
  • Letter from the school principal stating that you are the student nominated to apply for The Cmolik Foundation scholarship from the school.  (see Ms. Mihic to arrange this last one)

University of Toronto Scholarships

Criteria

The University of Toronto offers a wide variety of scholarships  to students who demonstrate superior academic performance, original and creative thought, and exceptional performance in a broad context. Some examples of scholarships offered are those demonstrating financial need, claim Indigenous ancestry, international scholars, identify as Black, and out-of-province students. So if you’re intending on going to University of Toronto (currently ranked as #18 in the world and #1 in Canada! ), be sure to check out this list!

Due Dates

Varies but most can be applied for when applying to U of T.

Post-Secondary Entrance Scholarships

Most post-secondary institutions offer some sort of entrance scholarship. For most institutions, all you need to do is apply to the institution; however, read through instructions carefully to see if you need to supply “extras” to be considered for a scholarship. Most institutions do not announce scholarship winners until late in the spring . Check out the list of institutions that have applications now open:

UBC – offers the Presidential Scholars Award (formerly Major Entrance Scholarship) of  a one-time award of approximately $5,000, and renewable awards of up to $80,000 payable over four years. Apply by December 1, 2021.

SFU – open to domestic and international students and valued  from $10,000 up to an amount sufficient to cover tuition and mandatory supplementary fees. Initial application due December 15, 2021; supporting documents and references due by January 31st, 2022. Recipients will be notified from mid-March to mid-May 2021.

BCIT – offers range from $1.000-4,000. Check site for details.

University of the Fraser Valley – deadline to apply is March 1st, 2022. Check site for details.

Capilano University- deadline to apply is March 1st, 2022. Range in offers and criteria. Check site for details.

Douglas College – offers a variety of one-time scholarships or awards of up to $3,500, and renewable scholarships or awards of up to $20,000, payable over four years. Minimum GPA and community service required for consideration.

Langara College – deadline to apply is February 2022.  Check site for details.

Kwantlen Polytechnique – TBA

OUT OF PROVINCE SCHOLARSHIPS

University of Toronto – deadline to for early application  in November 7th, 2021; regular application deadline is January 15th. Check site for details.

McGill  University – deadline to apply is January 15,  2022.  Check site for details.

Waterloo University – deadline to apply is Feburary 18th,  2022.  Check site for details.

RBC Future Launch Scholarship

Criteria

For Canadian youth between 15-29 years old who are enrolled part-time in school or not in school at all. Grades and transcripts are not required! Must not work at RBC or a dependent of someone working at RBC.

Value

450 scholarships  @ $1,500 that can be used for workshops, courses, textbooks, certificates, etc.

Launchpad Scholarship by Tundra Technical

Criteria

Women make up nearly half the workforce, but in some of the most important industries —Science Technology and Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) — women are still extremely underrepresented.

Ken Michel Memorial Scholarship for Carpentry

Criteria

In loving memory of a man whose skill in the carpentry trade and the love of his people helped build the foundations of honour, pride, and strength in his community.

This scholarship acknowledges both strong work ethic and the desire to work towards the betterment of the community as a whole.

For students of Indigenous ancestry.
