Horatio Algers Vocational and Technical Education Scholarship

Criteria

The Horatio Alger Skills & Trades Scholarships are awarded to eligible students in British Columbia.

  • Have completed high school (or earned high school equivalency credential) by July 1
  • Applying or enrolled for Fall 2026 in a vocational or technical certificate program at a government or non-for-profit institution, with direct pathways to employment.
  • Demonstrate critical financial need ($100,000 or less annual net income per family is required)
  • Demonstrate perseverance in overcoming adversity
  • Be under the age of 35
  • Be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident residing in British Columbia

Michael J. Fox Theatre Visual and Performing Arts Scholarships

Criteria

Each year, the Michael J. Fox Theatre Society selects graduating Burnaby School District (SD41) students who have demonstrated exemplary aptitude for the Arts as recipients of the Michael J. Fox Theatre Visual and Performing Arts Scholarship.

Scholarships will be awarded at the discretion of the selection committee based on the
following criteria:

  • Demonstrated interest, dedication and aptitude in an arts or in multiple arts disciplines, e.g. dance, drama, music, visual arts, theatre, script writing, stagecraft, directing, media arts
  • History of school and/or community volunteering
  • Additional consideration will be given to students who face financial adversity pursuing their chosen post-secondary program

Applicants to the Michael J. Fox Theatre Visual and Performing Arts Scholarship must be:

  • a student graduating from a Burnaby School District (SD41) secondary school at the end
    of the 2025-2026  school year.
  • enrolled in a visual or performing arts course in a Burnaby (SD41) secondary school for the 2026-2027 school year.
  • pursuing a post-secondary Degree or Certificate in an Arts discipline.
  • a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident.

Procedure

Completed Applications Packages must include:

  • Your completed Student Application Form
  • Short Essay Responses (Instructions in Application Form)
  • Your secondary school transcript
  •  A summary of your school and/or community volunteer activities
  •  Three (3) reference letters, including one from a teacher of the Visual and Performing Arts in your school
  • a Digital Portfolio
    • Include up to four samples from your portfolio or a maximum 5-minute audio or
      video compilation
    • Please access the form to upload audition/portfolio materials through the QR
      code below. You must use your Burnaby School District Credentials to access
      form (e.g. e12345@burnabyschools.ca and your regular District e-mail
      password).

Grace Family Network Foundation Scholarship

Criteria

The Grace Family Network Foundation scholarship fund awards deserving high school graduates in financial need. The awards are intended to encourage students who are pursuing a post-secondary education and who have demonstrated not only academic achievement but also interest in their communities.

  • A resident of Metro Vancouver (applicable municipalites)
  • Currently registered in Grade 12
  • Criteria: students with outstanding academic and leadership achievements demonstrating financial need
  • Evidence of enrolment or application to a post-secondary school in the 2024-2025 academic year
  • essay component:
  • A one page essay on “How have you shown resilience in the face of adversity?” (see application form for more details)

Burnaby Sport Hall of Fame Scholarship

Criteria

The Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame was formed in 2001 to honour Burnaby’s past athletic excellence.

  • • A graduating Grade 12 student enrolled at a B.C. secondary school (public or private);
    • A resident of Burnaby for at least the past three years;
    • Future plans to attend a post-secondary institution on a full-time basis;
    • Show evidence of high athletic ability and performance;
    • Maintain minimum C+ average (copy of the most recent transcript must be included);
    • Demonstrated leadership; and
    • Be active in school and community.

2 x $1,000 scholarships to to athletes from Burnaby.
