After a long, hot summer, it is nice to be back inside the building. Those returning to BNSS may have noticed some new faces around the building. In addition to a whole new admin. team, there is a new teacher-librarian as well – Ms. Strong. We were sad to see Mr. Irwin leave, especially since he was able to put up with us for 5 years! He has moved on to Marlborough Elementary where he will be working with K-7s.

The library has opened as of today and is open Monday – Friday from 8:15-3:45 (though we are often open earlier and close later than official times posted). Please enjoy food, drinks (including water and coffee), gum, and phone calls BEFORE entering the library. Remember, this is an environment of learning. Students are expected to work together or individually without disturbing others. The library offers desktop computers, books, magazines, newspapers, audiobooks, and DVDs for student enjoyment. Check out our library sometime this week!

Here is a list of upcoming events:

Tuesday, September 30th – Period 1 teachers will be distributing overdue notices to their classes. This will include students who have not returned resources from last year.

October is School Libraries Month!

Wednesday, October 1st @ lunch – Library Club Meeting – Interested in books? Want to join a club? How about the Library Club??? Join us at lunch in the library on Wednesday to hear more about the different committees the Library Club offers. You must attend the meeting to join. Bring your lunch and see you then!

Monday, October 27th – Drop Everything and Read – Teachers will read a selection of excerpts from four of our Vikings Read titles. Come down to the library for your chance to win one of five Chapters book cards at the end of the school day. 

Wednesday, Oct 29th – Vikings Read Launch – Join us at lunch when we formally launch our Vikings Read titles for 2014. What is Vikings Read? Check it out here.

Friday, October 31st – Stop by the library in your costume and receive a treat. Literary characters get more!

The Vikings Read 2014 Winner is…

The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein!

Thank you to all the students and staff who participated in this years Vikings Read program by reading the titles, participating in book talks, recommending the titles to  peers, and overall support for the program! We’re sorry we couldn’t have a celebration of the winner this year but stay tuned in October when we reveal the Vikings Read 2015 titles!

Prize names will be posted in front of the library sometime next week.

Vikings Read 2014 Voting Ends!

Vikings Read Voting has now ended. Stay tuned to tomorrow’s PA announcement of the winner.

Prize winner names will be posted in front of the library sometime next week.

Viking Read Voting begins today! Have you read any or all of our Vikings Read titles this year? If so, click here and vote for you favourite? First 100 to vote will receive a prize!

Do you prefer the mystery of the Outback or the slowing of the Earth creating personal and environmental disaster? Maybe you prefer the mystery of Sherlock Holmes or perhaps the fantasy game that seeps into reality? Is it narration by a dog or street urchins that pique you interest? Is it the utraviolent streets of a graphic novel or ultraviolent southern Africa that you can empathize most with? Do you prefer to laugh with the bullied or be spooked by what lurks in the forest?

We want to hear it all so be sure to vote! Let us know which book you feel all Vikings (that’s you Burnaby North students!) should read and why. You can also nominate books for future Vikings Reads.

Voting runs from May 1 – May 26. Winner will be announced at the Vikings Read celebration on Wednesday, May 28th at lunch. Join us then for cake and prizes!! Due to circumstances beyond our control, the party has been cancelled. The Vikings Read 2014 winner will be announced during Wednesday’s PA announcements.

You can only vote once.

Vikings Talk – Jasper Jones

Visit by Author Susin Nielsen

Students from a number of English 8 classes enjoyed a visit by Susin Nielsen, the author of Vikings Read 2014 nominee The Reluctant Journal of Henry K. Larsen.  During each of the two sessions Ms. Nielsen talked about her background, spoke of her three novels, and took questions from an interested audience.  The attentive students laughed throughout the presentation as Ms. Nielsen made references ranging from her work writing for and acting in the classic Canadian teen drama Degrassi Junior High to the tale of how two Toronto librarians tried on different occasions to get her book Dear George Clooney, Please Marry My Mom into the hands of George Clooney himself at his home in Lake Como, Italy!  The students were even treated to a reading from Ms. Nielsen’s yet to be released next novel!!  Ms. Nielsen answered student questions on numerous topics.  She told the audiences how she gets through writer’s block (by continuing to write), laid out her favourite part of the writing process (“having written”, i.e., finishing the first draft), gave book recommendations (The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian and The Fault in Our Starts – among others), and revealed her favourite author when she was young (Judy Blume).

Students are encouraged to pick up a copy of Susin Nielsen’s work from our library.  Our collection includes:
Word Nerd, Dear George Clooney, Please Marry My Mom, and The Reluctant Diary of Henry K. Larsen.

All of April is Poetry Month – submit your poems and check out the Poetry Wall in the library all this month. Also, keep an eye on the school bulletin for contests!

Thursday, April 3rd – overdue notices will be distributed during period 1. Spring off to a good start by returning those overdues!

Wednesday, April 9th @ lunch – Vikings TalkThe Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein

April 22nd – 25th is Literacy Week! Stay tuned for upcoming events such as a Scavenger Hunt, Movie Days, a Spelling Bee, and more. There will be prizes!!!

Tuesday, April 22nd during periods 8 & 7 – Susin Nielsin, author of Word Nerd, Dear George Clooney, Please Marry my Mother, and The Reluctant Journal of Henry K. Larsen, will be visiting to discuss her work as an author. Interested in joining us? Come down to the library for an in-school field trip form.

Vikings Talk – The Hound of the Baskervilles

Do you love this show?!?! How about reading the book?

The Hound of the Baskervilles is frequently regarded as one of  Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s greatest Shelock Holmes stories. What’s not to enjoy? The story focuses on a supernatural hound that haunts the Baskerville family. Read the book or the graphic novel as Holmes and his trusted friend John Watson uncover the mystery.

Join us for Vikings Talk when we discuss both the novel and graphic novel on April 23rd in the Library at lunch. See you then!
