Burnaby District Literacy – Page 9

Thank you to Aja Geddes, teacher from Capitol Hill, for sharing some great strategies she uses with her students to keep them excited about reading!  Aja has generously offered to share these ideas with us!

With this “Book Request Sheet” students can write down books they want for the classroom or school library.

With the “Someday list” students can keep track of books they want to read.  Perhaps they heard about a good book from a friend, and don’t want to forget about it!

With this “top picks” form, if a student really liked a book, they can fill out one of these sheets, and they get displayed in the classroom.  This is a great way to generate interest in a variety of books.  This is done in book stores in real life, so how great it is to bring this into the classroom to create excitement around reading!

If you have something you’d like to share, that sparks a love of reading or writing in your classroom, please send it to Tanis.Anderson@sd41.bc.ca

If you are interested in starting Daily 5 for literacy, or Daily 3 for math in your classroom, join us to receive a copy of this book and explore how to set up this program.

The Daily 5 enhances classroom practices based on years of experience in classrooms and compelling new brain research.

The Daily 5 provides a way for any teacher to structure literacy and math time to increase student independence and allow for individualized attention in small groups and one-on-one support.

Thank you to Denise Ferreira, English Department Head at Byrne Creek, for sharing these rubrics she uses with her secondary students.  She explicitly teaches her students how to use these rubrics, and provides much modelling.

This single point rubric has many purposes, such as:

  • giving feedback to students
  • a summative assessment
  • a self-assessment

The second rubric is a self-assessment rubric.  This could be used for students to process and engage in while they are working, and then handing it in when they submit their work.  It helps students to see what they think they can do as they are heading to a more formal assessment.

Enjoy!
