It’s NanoWriMo Time!

NaNoWriMo, short for National Novel Writing Month, is an annual event that challenges participants to write a 50,000 word novel during the month of November.

To give a sense of how much that is, here is a list of novels with roughly 50,000 words: Brave New World, The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, The Great Gatsby, The Notebook, Of Mice and Men and Fight Club.

Sounds crazy? Over 300,000 writers worldwide participated in 2013. NaNoWriMo is for anyone who has ever even thought of writing a novel.

There are no restrictions on genre or topic, and quality does not matter. What matters is that writers end the month with a complete first-draft of a novel. The goal of NaNoWriMo is to get people writing and to encourage them to finish.  To ensure this, there is an online community to track your progress and to exchange ideas and words of encouragement to fellow writers.

So, to everyone reading this: I challenge you to write a novel in a month. Join Burnaby North’s NaNoWriMo club or register for free at http://nanowrimo.org to get started.

Vikings Talk – Maggot Moon by Sally Gardner

Come join us for our first Vikings Talk of the Vikings Read 2014-15 season!

This time we will be discussing Sally Gardner’s award winning book, Maggot Moon. The story focuses on Standish Treadwell whose only friend Hector has suddenly disappeared after they have made a dangerous discovery. Now it is up to Standish and a small group of rebels to expose the Motherland.

We will meet in the magazine section of the library at lunch on November 12th so bring your lunch, grab a friend, and join us!

Vikings Read 2015 Launch

Today is the day…

The library will be hosting its 9th Vikings Read Kick-Off today during lunch and we would like to invite YOU. We will be open at lunch and set up gallery-style so you can come check out this year’s titles. We will be showing a snazzy video to promote the program and Vikings Talk committee members will be around to help promote the books they have read. It’s a fun event so bring your lunch, drag a friend and come check out Vikings Read 2015!

Drop Everything and Read 2014

Today, teachers from each of your classes will be reading short selections from four of this year’s Vikings Read titles.  Don’t have a class during one of the blocks? Make sure to come down to the library at the beginning of the block to hear one of the librarians read each of the selections. We hope this inspires you to continue the challenge either by reading our Vikings Read titles or any book that sparks your interest!

Also, come down to the library after school today for your chance to win one of five Chapters gift cards. All you need to know is the title and author of each of the books read to you today. Contest closes at 4pm on Monday and winners will be drawn and announced starting on Tuesday.

Winners names have been posted in Wednesday’s bulletin and in front of library. Check it out to see if you have one a prize! Thanks to all who participated – it was our largest D.E.A.R. contest turnout to date!

Celebrate School Libraries!

National School Libraries Week – October is National School Libraries Month so come celebrate with your school library! Here are the following events taking place in our library next week:
 
Monday – Drop Everything and Read – teachers fom each of your classes will read from 2015’s Vikings Read nominees. After school, students can stop by the library after school and enter the D.E.A.R. contest where you can win one of 5 Chapters gift cards. Have a study block? Ms. Mihic will be reading the selections in the library as well!
 
Wednesday – Vikings Read 2015 Launch – come check out our showcase Vikings Read 2015 nominees in the library at lunch . Posters, bookmarks, and titles will be available!
 
Friday- Free Book Fridays – Its back!!! While supplies lasts… Also, wear a costume, get some candy (bonus for those dressed up as literary characters!)

After a long, hot summer, it is nice to be back inside the building. Those returning to BNSS may have noticed some new faces around the building. In addition to a whole new admin. team, there is a new teacher-librarian as well – Ms. Strong. We were sad to see Mr. Irwin leave, especially since he was able to put up with us for 5 years! He has moved on to Marlborough Elementary where he will be working with K-7s.

The library has opened as of today and is open Monday – Friday from 8:15-3:45 (though we are often open earlier and close later than official times posted). Please enjoy food, drinks (including water and coffee), gum, and phone calls BEFORE entering the library. Remember, this is an environment of learning. Students are expected to work together or individually without disturbing others. The library offers desktop computers, books, magazines, newspapers, audiobooks, and DVDs for student enjoyment. Check out our library sometime this week!

Here is a list of upcoming events:

Tuesday, September 30th – Period 1 teachers will be distributing overdue notices to their classes. This will include students who have not returned resources from last year.

October is School Libraries Month!
