Six Men Reader’s Response (War)

This week, Division 2 had the powerful book Six Men by David McKee read to them. Students were asked to write down powerful words from the story, or words that caused a picture to appear in their minds. Students then chose 7 words from their lists and arranged them into a Word-List Poem. A Word-List Poem is simply a collection of words arranged in an order that makes sense and is powerful. The results were impressive! Here are a few of the poems:

April is National Poetry Month

National Poetry Month is celebrated throughout North America during the month of April every year. Inaugurated by the Academy of American Poets in 1996, this year is Poetry Month’s 16th birthday!

Visit Scholastic’s “Poetry Idea Engine” where you can create haiku, limericks, free verse and cinquain poetry.

This week, division 1 will continue their genre studies by looking at Poetry. Each student will borrow a book of poems, and will choose his/her favourite to share with the class.

Read-a-Louds Dec 12 – 16

Since the Holiday Season is soon upon us, this week we will listen to a recorded story, The Night Before Christmas, originally written by Clement C. Moore in the 1820’s. Even though this classic poem/story is almost 200 years old, it is still iconic and loved by many children and adults alike.

This version is performed by the legendary group “Peter, Paul and Mary” – it includes a musical version of the poem, and a narrative version as well, all on CD. Happy Holidays to everyone!

April Library Happenings

This month will be quite busy in the Library! Division 1 (gr.7) will be conducting research on famous French-Canadians.

Division 10 (gr.3/4) will be writing Haiku poems in honour of National Poetry Month; Ms. L. and Mr. S. will be collaborating on a project inspired by the book Guyku: a year of haiku for boys by Bob Raczka and Peter H. Reynolds. Of course, we have created “Galku” for our aspiring female haiku writers! Stay tuned for more details…

Division 14 (gr.2) will be learning how to research and take notes about a favourite animal. We’ll be using books and the laptops for conducting research.

Aboriginal Circle will be held in the Library on Monday, April 11th.

Thank you to students Emily, Joanna and Katherine, for decorating the Library for Easter. It looks fantastic!
