This week, prior to our school’s Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday, I read the picture book , The Road to Afghanistan, written by Linda Granfield and illustrated by Brian Deines to all the intermediate classes. It is a fictional but poignant story about a soldier who fought in Afghanistan who comes from a family of soldiers. The story has a wonderful twist at the end when we find out the soldier is actually a young woman when we assumed while we were reading along that it is a young man. Even though it’s a book about war, the artwork is beautiful.
