Words Their Way is a program that offers a developmental curriculum for phonics/spelling instruction, reading fluency and vocabulary development. The hands-on activities engage students as they actively categorize their ‘word sorts’ and the assessment inventory provides a clear indicator of where each student is in the process.
We’ve been working with a new group of teachers this term to further our understanding of word sorting. Check out the page under LITERACY BRIDGE for details on the actual “how to” process. An added feature is using technologies to provide multimodal practice. As well, posting to a blog creates opportunities for shared partnerships with parents. More importantly, the program provides a strong connection to the sound features of Fast ForWord. We’re discovering that students who are in Fast ForWord and also have the added element of Words Their Way – ‘word work’ make quicker connections.
