I’ve posted about Destination Reading before but it seems like a good time to bring it up again. Especially since most of you are on the home stretch with many of your students completing the first two products and enrolling a new batch. Your students have been involved with an intensive program to retrain those parts of the brain connected to learning to read. Using parts of DS-Reading will provide practice in developing reading skills and further gain confidence.
Starting with Unit 7 (Course 1), students practice (cvc) short vowels (the same ones found in Language v2 and Language to Reading) and sight words all within story and word puzzles. A nice build up to Unit 8 (all about e’s) and Unit 10 (blends) rounds out the review. The interactivity of the activities (guided practice to independent practice) as well as the auditory supports provide immediate feedback as students move through the lessons.
Course 2 is really meant for increasing fluency and comprehension. It comprises interactive activities with more reading content like mysteries, science, inventors, nature and space. Course 3 focuses on vocabulary and comprehension strategies that apply across the intermediate curriculum. Course 4 applies advanced skills and strategies to longer and more complex passages (geared for upper intermediate/secondary).
Destination is a web-based program and can be accessed anywhere, any time there is an internet connection. This is especially popular with parents who want to be able to support their children at home. Our district has a number of licenses for students and teachers. Please email me if you are interested.
