On Oct 1st and 2nd, we hosted 2 days of Fast ForWord training with Tom Chapin (Trainer Extraordinaire from Arkansas!) from Scientific Learning. What a marathon of excitement and possibilities! Our brains certainly had a workout and Tom’s stories kept us in stitches. Focus on the 1st was on secondary (Burnaby Mountain, Byrne Creek, Fraser Park) and on the 2nd, elementary (Cascade Heights, Westridge, Armstrong, Taylor Park, Gilmore, Morley). We had a day of hands on experience with the exercises along with beginning foundations on brain neuroscience, intervention examples and other supports online. As we moved through the practice exercises, reflection comments and questions, it reaffirmed that the program was part of a larger picture in literacy for our students. For some it may be the one piece that will help them become successful learners, for others it will lay out foundations that were missed. And for many it will also affirm that “attachment” as suggested by Gordon Neufeld is a huge piece of the puzzle.
SUPPORT STUFF! – The Advisory Committee, through feedback gleaned from last year’s sites, provided each site with intervention boxes, posterboard organizations, and flashcards to support both LSS program and regular classroom program.
