Our pilot summer school session went really well. Most of the grades 3-7 students were new to the program. Quite a few of them were able to complete Language v2 during the month-long time period. The program integrated literacy components that included hands-on word study, communication strategies within photography and movie making as well as self-assessment. One student commented, “…learning this Fast ForWord thing sure has helped my memory…” The gains in confidence and self esteem were certainly evident with many during the month.
Both students and teacher learned a great deal throughout the process, even with the heat wave! One of the strengths was the active component of word study, which married well with phonological processing in FFW. I will be sending all schools who had students enrolled a detailed report when we all get back.
Having provided these students with the opportunity to continue their reading progress throughout the summer, strengthen specific reading deficit areas and gain self confidence are the results that we were hoping for.
Congratulations on an excellent ‘first year’ for the FF program at Summer Session.
