The Connection between Speech & Language Skills and Literacy

Speech and language skills and literacy skills are interconnected. “Learning to read is heavily dependent on linguistic knowledge, specifically phonological knowledge for word decoding and language comprehension” (Tambyraja & Schmitt, 2020, p. 341). Children with language impairments are most at risk for literacy difficulties (Botting et al., 2006; Freed et al., 2011; Tambyraja, Schmitt, et al., 2015).

Early Literacy includes Learning to Read and Phonological Awareness skills.
