3 x $1,000 South Burnaby Metro Club bursaries: Due March 31, 2019

The South Burnaby Metro Club will be awarding 3 x $1,000 bursaries representing our youth soccer, basketball, and baseball programs. The bursaries are open to all graduating grade 12 students who have been in the past or present actively involved with one of our programs for a minimum of three years.  Multiple sport applications will be accepted, however, you must have participated for at least three years in each specified sport.

$1,000 Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame Scholarships for athletes: Due April 15th

Since it was incorporated in 1892, Burnaby has produced many fine athletes. The Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame was formed in 2001 to honour Burnaby’s past athletic excellence. The Hall also encourages future excellence in athletics, academics and sportsmanship by offering $1,000 scholarships to a male athlete and a female athlete from Burnaby.

Eligibility requirements:

• A graduating Grade 12 student enrolled at a B.C. secondary school (public or private). Priority will be given to those attending school in Burnaby

• A resident of Burnaby for at least the past three years

• Future plans to attend a post-secondary institution on a full-time basis

• Show evidence of high athletic ability and performance

• Maintain a minimum of a C+ average (a copy of the most recent transcript must be included)

• Demonstrated leadership

• Be active in school and community

2 x $1,000 Lumen Scholarships for graduates impacted by invisible illnesses: Due April 30th

​LUMEN Society is offering 2 scholarships, of $1000 each, for 2019 high school graduates who have been impacted by invisible illnesses. 

Invisible illnesses are health conditions that are not visibly apparent, including mental health conditions, autoimmune diseases, and learning disabilities. This scholarship is open to people who have been impacted by invisible illnesses in any way. Whether you have an invisible illness yourself or someone in your life has an invisible illness that has impacted you, you are eligible to apply.

NEW BURNABY SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 Spirit of BC Scholarship for students passionate about athletics, visual arts, OR performing arts: due Tuesday, April 2nd

To be considered for the award the student should:

  • be passionate about athletics, visual arts or performing arts
  • for athletics – involved in school or community as a player, manager or other  contributing role
  • for visual arts – demonstrate evidence through a portfolio of work
  • for performing arts – involved in school or community as a performer or a supporting role
  • have demonstrated having a positive influence in the school or community through community service or volunteer work and through dedication and hard work
  • exemplify good citizenship and strong character demonstrating personal responsibility and respect for others
  • maintained a good academic standing
  • demonstrated plans to continue with education in a post-secondary program
  • formally submitted a completed application package to the school’s scholarship committee

Up to $40,000 Capilano University Scholarships and Awards: due

The new Capilano Community Leadership Awards (CCLA), valued at $2,500, recognize high school students who are entering the university with a strong academic standing, as well as leadership and volunteerism in the community. We are pleased to be able to partner with you on the nomination process for these new awards.
Our premier entrance scholarships are the Capilano Excellence Scholarships (CAPX), valued at up to $40,000 each. Ten of these four year renewable scholarships are available to high school graduates who demonstrate excellence in academics and show leadership in their school and community.

$2,500 Daneen Skilling Scholarship for students pursuing a career in Occupational Health and Safety: due March 15th

Daneen Skilling Scholarship:

This award will support a worthy student pursuing a career in Occupational Health and Safety through post-secondary studies and a commitment to making workplaces physically and psychologically healthy and safe environments for workers and the communities where they operate.

Qualifications

The annual scholarship of $2,500 is offered by the Manufacturing Safety Alliance of BC. A secondary practicum opportunity is included in this scholarship following successful completion of studies with a minimum GPA of 3.5.

  • Applications will be accepted from students enrolling in an accredited Occupational Health and Safety program at college or university in BC (BCIT, UBC, SFU, UVIC, UNBC, or Okanagan College) for the 2019 – 2020 year.
  • Applicants will be accepted from high school graduates and those furthering their education in health and safety graduate studies as outlined in the list of qualified programs.
  • Applicants will submit abstracts showing their academic results
  • Applicants will submit an essay of 750 to 1,200 words explaining why workplace health and safety is important to them, and why they are pursuing this course of study.
  • Applicants will be Canadian citizens or permanent residents residing in the province of BC.

$2,500 Trevor Linden Community Spirit Scholarship: due March 15th

The Trevor Linden Community Spirit Scholarship rewards students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership abilities and exemplary contributions and commitment to enriching the lives of others in the community.


Who is eligible?

The Trevor Linden Community Spirit Scholarship recognizes four student leaders in the province of British Columbia who are entering their first year of post secondary education, are in good academic standing and have made exceptional contributions in the following areas:

  • School and community service, leadership
  • Initiating community development
  • Affecting positive change
  • Mentoring others
  • Personal development and growth
  • Good academic performance

Taking the time to do something for others during difficult times in one’s own life requires particularly outstanding commitment. This is why, as part of the selection process, the personal circumstances and/or challenges of each applicant will be considered. Applicants who possess personal qualities such as dedication, commitment to helping others and strength of character will also be considered.


How do we decide?

Each applicant is reviewed and scholarship recipients are chosen based on who most closely meets the selection criteria from various regions in British Columbia (provided there are suitable, qualified applicants).

A total of four scholarships will be awarded to high school students who have the academic skills to successfully enter and complete post secondary education on a full-time basis.

Scholarship recipients will be notified prior to the end of June.

$1000 Rotary Club of Burnaby Deer Lake Scholarship for Community Leadership – due April 5th

SCHOLARSHIP DESCRIPTION

This scholarship is awarded annually to a well-rounded student who has demonstrated strong citizenship and leadership skills as demonstrated through voluntary participation in community and school activities. The scholarship shall be applicable towards post- secondary education or trades training at any approved institution.

ELIGIBILITY

To be considered for this scholarship, applicant students should have:

  • demonstrated good citizenship and strong leadership skills;
  • been actively involved in community service and / or volunteer work
  • been actively involved in youth initiatives, activities and events in the Burnaby community;
  • been actively involved in school-based activities; and actively pursuing relevant school coursework.

GUIDELINES

1. A scholarship of $1000 will be awarded to a Senior Secondary student in the Burnaby School District. Funds will be administered through the Rotary Club of Burnaby – Deer Lake.

2. In order to be eligible for consideration:

a. A student must complete a personal application; or

b. A staff member at the student’s school must submit a nomination form.

3. All applications / nominations are to be submitted directly to:

2 x $3000 BCIT Pathways to Success Scholarships for students in technology, technical studies or trades: Due April 1st

SELECTION COMMITTEE CRITERIA GUIDELINES

  •   The School District selection committee will select the BCIT Pathway to Success Award Recipient(s).
  •   Selected students must meet or exceed the program’s entrance requirements. BCIT entrance requirements are program specific. For further information visit bcit.ca.
  •   Students must have applied to a full time first year technology, technical studies, or trade program (excluding Apprentice) and have a BCIT student number before being considered for an award.
  •   The School Districts will keep all original award selection documents and send a photocopy of their selected recipients BCIT Pathway to Success Award application.
  •   The award offer is subject to the student receiving full acceptance into a full-time BCIT program. Should the student(s) not gain full acceptance or not register for a full time program, the award will automatically be withdrawn.
