AP French 12                                                       Prerequisite: Fr11 Hon  (minimum 80% & teacher recommendation)

Students who wish to take AP French 12, must have received at least 80% in French Honours 11 or the recommendation of their teacher as well as a ‘G’ work habit mark. To reach AP level successfully in one school year, students need to be near fluent in the French language. The purpose of this course is to prepare students to write the AP French exam, which can give them University credit.  The base of this course is the French 12 program, enhanced with greater detail in grammatical concepts, literary works and cultural activities. Instruction in AP French 12 is given almost exclusively in French.

 

Course Description:

In this course, students will:

  • Complete a thorough overview of the material learned in French 11
  • Continue to develop all four aspects of language learning: reading, listening, speaking and writing
  • Become fluent in their ability to understand spoken French
  • Develop a positive attitude towards French culture in Canada and in the world
  • Develop work habits and skills that encourage self-monitoring and self-motivation
  • Participate, cooperate and collaborate in small and large groups.
  • Read Le Petit Prince

 

Some themes that may be covered are:

  • Travelling through the Francophone world
  • Artists and creativity
  • Identity, society, and contemporary world issues

 

Evaluation Guidelines

In language classes, evaluation is ongoing.  It is both formative (small assignments graded throughout the course of a unit) and summative (final tests and projects). Evaluation may include assignments, presentations, tests, quizzes, projects, skits, homework, class work, group work and individual assessment. Evaluation will examine the four ways of knowing a language; reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Successful French students have increased work possibilities in the federal government and for working or studying abroad.  With over 60 nations in which French is spoken, travel experiences can be facilitated and enhanced with a proficiency in the French language.   Furthermore, research has shown that learning languages increases higher-level thinking.  Finally, it also gives students the opportunity to develop a better understanding of others as well as develop greater cultural sensitivity.
