Burnaby South Counselling Department

University of Alberta is coming to Burnaby South on Wednesday, November 16th (9:45am to 10:30am) - in the Multi-purpose Room.

The University Presenter will provide information on University of Alberta's Programs, Campus Life and Admission Requirements.  It will also be an excellent opportunity for all of you to get all of your questions answered right away!

University of Alberta will also be holding Application Workshops on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at Various Times at the Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver (791 W. Georgia St).

Advisors will guide Grade 12 students through the application process to help complete and submit their online application for admissions.  Advisors will also be able to provide advice on programs information and answer any other questions.

It is always important to check Post-Secondary websites for the most up-to-date information related to admission requirements and averages, as the information on here is to be used as a guide.

Changes to our scholarships

The U of T Scholars Program, for which students are automatically considered, has been increased from $6,000 to $7,500 for students starting in September 2017. We have discontinued the President's Entrance Scholarship Program which has allowed for the increased U of T Scholars Award. For scholarship consideration, the university does not include repeated marks; the grade achieved from the first attempt in a course will be used.

The U of T National Scholarship Program is open for applications from domestic high school students in Canada. Students who have been nominated by their schools as National Book Award recipients may submit applications to the National Scholarship Program. The deadline for the National Book Award and the National Scholarship Program is November 4.

Finally, this year the university has introduced the Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship. This scholarship recognizes top international students from around the world, including those living in Canada. Please visit pearson.utoronto.ca for more information about how you can nominate a student to become a Pearson Scholar.

Deadlines and supplemental applications

The application deadline for all direct-entry undergraduate programs is January 13, 2017. Find deadlines for all application types and programs here.

We also want to remind you that most programs at U of T do not require supplementary applications, auditions or profiles. Admission categories that do require additional applications or information include:

• The Humanities and Social Sciences admission categories have been combined into one called "Social Sciences & Humanities"
• French has become its own admission category
• Visual & Performing Arts, Arts Management has been added as an admission category

Kinesiology & Physical Education

• Biology and Physics are now recommended, not required

U of T Mississauga

• Education Studies minor added
• Forensic Science minor added
• Combined Degree Program in Environmental Management and MSc in Sustainability Management added
• Combined Psychology programs with MA in Child Study Education added

Applying to the Faculty of Arts & Science

1. Online application is now open
   We are now accepting applications for next September. The deadline for current high school students is February 28, 2017. Encourage your students to apply as soon as possible. www.uvic.ca/apply
2. Supplementary application materials update
   Several UVic programs require applicants to answer supplementary questions or upload specific documents (such as letters of intent, resumes and references) in addition to their regular application. Depending on the program, students may be asked to upload these materials before or after submitting their application, or to send documents directly to the department. A listing of programs that require supplemental application information is available on our website. www.uvic.ca/supplemental
3. Self-reporting opens February 15, 2017
   We would like to remind all current grade 12 students completing a Canadian high school curriculum or a full IB diploma at a school in Canada must self-report their grades between February 15 and March 31, 2017.  www.uvic.ca/self-reporting  The link for students to self-report will be available on the application portal beginning February 15, 2017.
4. English language proficiency deadlines
   All applicants to UVic (regardless of country of origin or citizenship status) are required to demonstrate English language proficiency prior to admission. www.uvic.ca/elr
   Deadlines to submit proof of English language proficiency are:
   *  Gustavson School of Business – March 15, 2017
       *  All other faculties and programs – May 1, 2017
   Students are reminded that applications will not be processed until proof of language proficiency has been confirmed. They are encouraged to submit documentation as soon as possible
5. MyUVic accounts (NEW)
   In order for prospective students to receive notifications regarding upcoming recruitment events and activities, register for events, book campus tours and receive timely reminders during key phases of the application/admission process, they will now be required to sign up for a MyUVic account at www.myuvic.ca.  Please encourage students who are interested in UVic to sign up as soon as possible.

There are a number of important updates for the month of October.

New application deadline

The application deadline to be considered for early admission for the 2017 Winter Session is December 1, 2016.

The final application deadline for the 2017 Winter Session is January 15, 2017.

Personal Profile

The Personal Profile is used to assess a student's preparedness for university. Applicants are asked to reflect on past experiences, accomplishments, and challenges by answering five to seven questions. Read our advice and watch our video on how to put forth a strong Personal Profile.

Undergraduate entrance scholarships

The Major Entrance Scholarship program recognizes exceptional students for their academic and non-academic achievements by offering awards valued up to $40,000. Students who apply by December 1 will be automatically considered for this award.

The Centennial Scholars Entrance Award is designed to improve access to post-secondary education for students facing significant financial barriers. This award is valued up to $80,000 and requires a separate application. Deadline to apply is December 1. 

A number of Major Entrance Scholarships and Centennial Scholars Entrance Awards are designated specifically for Aboriginal students. Applicants can self-identify as Aboriginal in their application to UBC.

International undergraduate entrance scholarships

UBC also recognizes the achievements of outstanding students from around the world by devoting non-public funds to scholarships and awards for international students.

Tuition waiver for youth in care

UBC is now offering a tuition waiver for eligible youth aging out of care. Students can identify as a youth in care in their application to UBC.
