What is CUE and what do they do?

The Canadian Universities Event (CUE) is a forum designed to highlight Canada’s universities to British Columbia’s secondary school students and families. CUE brings together over 50 of Canada’s finest post-secondary institutions and showcases them over two weeks in October. We are committed to helping students find their perfect fit in Canadian post-secondary education.

Who should attend CUE?

Any student who may be considering post-secondary education! All of our Live Events will feature representatives from participating universities. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions and explore their post-secondary options through institution profiles and live sessions.

Upcoming Events

This year CUE is going virtual! Simply register, gain access to our Live Events listings, and start exploring!

All of our Live Events will feature representatives from participating universities. You can chat and ask questions, gather information and stay connected! Just like individual universities, each live event will look a little bit different! Check out the descriptions of each live event to find out what to expect.

Student events are not high school or region specific. Students will be able to register and login for the CUE virtual events on the day that suits their schedule. Each attending CUE institution will be hosting online sessions during the times listed below, and we encourage students to explore these virtual booths with curiosity and an open mind.

Student events are scheduled for:

  • Tuesday, October 6: 4-8PM Pacific
  • Thursday, October 8: 4-8PM Pacific

A Few Tidbits of Info for you to think about as you finalize your Courses for September...

  • MAKE SURE TO RESEARCH YOUR POST-SECONDARY ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS NOW
    • SFU & UBC have made A LOT of changes this past year regarding what their prerequisites and faculty requirements are:
    • University of Toronto:
      • We will consider a wide range of Grade 11 and 12 courses and expect to see at least six courses presented at the Grade 12 level.
      • Particular attention will be given to marks in pre-requisite subjects and in other courses related to the applicant’s intended area of study.
      • Calculus 12 or Calculus AP (AB or BC) is required for programs with the Calculus prerequisite
      • Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses are acceptable
      • Courses in Applied Skills, Career Education, Work Experience, Challenge Exams, and Co-op courses are not used for admission consideration.
    • Second Language Requirements....
      • It is not a High School Graduation Requirement....BUT
        • Most BC Universities require students to have completed at least a Language 11 (ie; French 11, Spanish 11, Punjabi 11)
        • SFU --> will accept an Introductory Language 11
        • UBC --> requires a Language 11
          • BUT....if you're planning on going into the Faculty of Arts (English, History, Geography, Psychology), then you will have to complete either a Language 12OR complete a 1st year language course at the University
            • FYI...that means spending approx $1000+ for a first year language, that you will probably never use again...what's worse, taking a Language 12 course, or a University Language Course???
    • Wanting To Go Into Business??
      • If you are looking at studying Business, at any University/College, the following Courses are highly recommended to take:
        • Pre-Calculus 12 --> requirement for applying for program
        • Calculus --> highly recommended as you will be required to take Calculus in First Year
        • Economics 12 --> in First Year, you take Macroeconomics and Microeconomics
        • Financial Accounting 12 --> highly recommended as you will be required to take Financial Accounting in First Year
        • Marketing & Promotions 11 & E-Commerce 12 --> if you want to focus on anything in the Marketing realm while in the Business Program, having this course will benefit you
        • Entrepreneurship 12 --> If you want to focus on Marketing, or Opening your own Business, then having this course will benefit you

As a reminder: there will be NO COURSE CHANGES IN SEPTEMBER…so make all of your choices very carefully….please do your research on your Post-Secondary requirements so you have all of you pre-requisites

If you have forgotten which Courses are being offered for September 2020, please see each Grade Specific Course Selection Forms below:

Don’t forget that these Course Request Verifications Forms MUST be completed ONLINE and are DUE FRIDAY, APRIL 24TH BY 3PM --> even if you are happy with all of your requests, we need to ensure that you and your Parents/Guardians have seen all of your requests for September.

Hey Grade 11’s & 12’s!!

Are you interested in learning how culture affects our personal identities, as well as our relationships and interactions with others?

There is a BRAND NEW Course Online being offered through Burnaby Online to Grade 11’s & 12’s called Introduction to Global & Intercultural Experience 11/12

What is the Course?

This is a hands-on course that gives students the opportunity to act as peer helpers to newly arrived Burnaby international students. The course will combine face-to-face training on becoming a global peer helper with online discussions to support students to successfully navigate culture. This course will also provide students with a hands-on, practical experience as Intercultural Mentors, where they can see their learning in the field.

Communicating across cultures has become an essential skill in the 21st century, and BC students are needing the skills to thrive in a quickly changing world. Employers and post-secondary value intercultural competence, while these skills can also help us build stronger communities that recognize and affirm diversity.

Whether you are thinking about a career in business, leadership, health sciences, social work, international politics, or simply wanting to think about the way your own cultural background affects your behaviours and beliefs – this course is for you.

Such knowledge and skills are highly sought after by today’s employers as well as post-secondary schools. Universities Canada, which represents universities such as UBC, McGill and University of Toronto, recently emphasized the need for “our next generation of leaders and innovators to have core global competencies, including knowledge of business culture, language skills, and intercultural competence.”

What Are the Goals of this Course?

  1. Increase one’s cultural awareness and understanding – recognize how our own cultures and histories affect our personal identities
  2. Understand how gestures, symbols, values, and communication patterns are affected by culture– and how these behaviours and beliefs affect our interactions.
  3. Examine different worldviews as students create an authentic relationship with someone from a different culture than one’s own.

If you are at all interested in taking this course, please sign up ASAP with Burnaby Online https://online.burnabyschools.ca/registration/

I have attached a copy of the Course Outline for more information.  If you do have any questions about this Course, please contact Ms. Cho (Diane.Cho@burnabyschools.ca) who is a Counsellor with our International Students Education Program.

If there are any other questions you may have, please feel free to pop by my office J

This is a fantastic opportunity if you are interested Grade 11s & 12s!!

Good Luck!!

Applying to University of Toronto (U of T)

All students can find our application, and details about next steps, at future.utoronto.ca/apply/applying.

Important Dates & Deadlines

We strongly encourage all applicants to submit their application by November 1. We also strongly encourage all applicants to submit their required documents by November 15. Programs will fill early, and some may fill even before the published deadlines.

Admission Consideration

Applicants are assessed for admission on their entire academic history. Emphasis is placed on their latest two years, however the admissions committee is looking for consistent academic achievement.

Some applicants may be asked to complete a self-reported grades form. It is important that applicants complete this form even if they have submitted official transcripts.

This year, admission decisions for secondary school applicants are released during three admission rounds, occurring in February, March, and May. It is strongly recommended that applicants submit required documentation well in advance of deadlines, as some programs fill early, and some may fill even before the published deadlines.
