The Pathway to Teacher Education Scholarship is awarded to 20 outstanding high school graduates who have demonstrated a commitment and aptitude for a career path in K-12 teaching. Winners receive a $5000 scholarship voucher to redeem when they are registered and attending an approved K-12 teacher education program at one of BC’s nine Faculties of Education.

Application

1. Complete the Application, including the written statement worth 60% overall, and the resume worth 40% overall. It must be completed online using the mandatory format. Scoring guides (PDF) are available for reference. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
2. Completed applications must be submitted to the Ministry no later than February 15, 2019.
3. Selection of winners will be finalized after August 31, 2019

Eligibility

You must:

• Meet basic eligibility requirements
• Be in your graduation year with graduation to occur by August 31 of the school year in which you apply
• Be eligible for a B.C. Certificate of Graduation (Dogwood Diploma) and fulfill graduation requirements of the Graduation Program (2018) by August 31, 2019
• Have at least a:
  • “B” (73% or above) in your Language Arts 11 final mark
  • “B” average in final course marks that fulfill graduation requirements of Science 11 or 12, Math 11 and Social Studies 11 or 12, with no more than one “C+” (67% or above) final course mark, (marks lower than “C+” are not accepted)
• Maintain a “B” average or better in Grades 11 and 12 final course marks required for graduation
• Write and pass a Language Arts 12 provincial examination

You cannot win both a Pathway to Teacher Education Scholarship and a BC Excellence Scholarship.

Your application package must include:

• Resume in the mandatory format
• Two reference letters, one from your community and one from your school
• A written statement, maximum 500 words, which describes why you want to be a teacher

Winners must redeem their vouchers within 7 years of their high school graduation. The expiry dates are shown on the vouchers. When redeeming, winners must provide a letter from their Faculty of Education confirming their enrolment in the K-12 teacher education program.

Schools will be notified in June if there is a conditional winner from their school. Winners will be notified directly in September when eligibility is confirmed.

Please note that each school is permitted to submit ONE application.  Therefore, your application is due to Ms. Falsetto and the Byrne Creek Scholarship Committee on Friday, February 8th.  Once you are shortlisted, the official application is due on Friday, February 15th.

The Adoptive Families Association of BC is pleased to announce our 2019 Youth Bursary Applications are now live on our website! The intention of our $1,000 bursaries are to provide funding that will assist in covering costs of tuition and/or costs directly related to the post-secondary programs (vocational, trade or academic post-secondary program, at an accredited BC institution) for youth in/from foster care in BC, or who have been adopted.

The Howard Legacy Youth Fund was established with a donation from Peggy Howard in 2012, and is made available to applicants who are current or former youth in care.

The AFABC Youth Bursary was established in 2014, with funding from the Adoptive Families Association of BC, and accepts applications from youth who have joined their family by legal adoption.

The Rick Blight Leadership in Action Scholarship for Athletes

If you are an athlete living in the Lower Mainland or in the Sea-to-Sky Corridor who is passionate about your sport and has made efforts to support your personal mental health and wellness or that of your sports team or community, we want to hear from you.  This scholarship is made possible by the Vancouver Canucks Alumni.

PURPOSE OF SCHOLARSHIP
In tribute to Rick’s life, the Crisis Centre is offering the Rick Blight Leadership in Action Scholarship for Athletes as a means to recognize the presence of mental wellness within athletics. Athleticism has the potential to be incredibly life promoting. It can also be competitive and prioritize physical wellness at the expense of mental and emotional well-being.  The Rick Blight Scholarship seeks to recognize athletes who have demonstrated both a dedication to leadership in their sport and an ongoing investment in their personal mental wellness and/or that of their sports team or community.  Actions in support of one’s personal mental wellness and/or that of their sports team or community may be demonstrated through things such as visiting a mental health professional, encouraging peers to reach out when in need, involving oneself in emotionally-sustaining community activities, supporting anti-stigma efforts, forming LGBTQ alliances, or attending community events mandated to promote mental wellness.

ELIGIBILITY

• A leader in your personal mental wellness and/or that of your sports team, or community;
• Demonstrating a dedication to your sport; and
• Currently enrolled in Grade 12 at a Lower Mainland/Sea-to-Sky Corridor high school.

The deadline for applications is Friday March 1, 2019 at 5pm.  Five scholarships valued at $1,000 will be awarded.  

Award recipients will be asked to attend the Crisis Centre’s Annual General Meeting in East Vancouver in the fall 2019 to receive their scholarship. Applicants will be notified of the decision by mid April.

Living a Long Life to the Fullest

The Stacey Levitt Memorial Award was created in memory and celebration of her life. On August 30, 1995, Stacey was struck and killed by a car while jogging in North Toronto. She was only 18 years old.

Stacey loved life, and this annual student award encourages Canadian youth to embody Stacey’s qualities and ideals, and Parachute’s overarching goal of a long life lived to the fullest, while maintaining an approach that is rooted in risk management and injury prevention. The selected recipient will receive $2,500 to do just that.

Application includes:

A short essay (maximum 2 pages, double-spaced, font size12) addressing the following questions:

• How do you demonstrate a long life lived to the fullest and how are you helping others to achieve this?
• How do you demonstrate Parachute’s goals, and brand values of nobility, courage, and inclusivity?
• If successful, how do you intend to use the funding provided by the Stacey Levitt Memorial Award?
