DISTRICT SCHOLARSHIPS available to Alpha Grads:
The following District bursaries/scholarships are available for Burnaby Secondary School Graduates and are valued from $250-$1000. You may apply for more than one of the following scholarships as long as you meet the stated criteria. Please READ the specific criteria for each scholarship or bursary before you apply.
□ Burnaby Civic Employee’s – CUPE Local 23 Scholarship (8 @ $500)
CRITERIA – CUPE LOCAL 23 SCHOLARSHIP
- Must be attending a BC post-secondary or vocational school
- Maintained a good academic standing
- Demonstrated good citizenship in school and the community
- Participated in volunteer activities
- Consideration will be given to a student with financial need
□ Burnaby Association of Senior Exempt Staff – BASES – Scholarship (2 @ $1000)
CRITERIA SCHOOL HANDOUT – BASES SCHOLARSHIP
APPLICATION – BASES COMMUNITY LEADER SCHOLARSHIP
- Maintained a good academic standing;
- Been actively involved in community service and/or volunteer work beyond that required for graduation; and
- Demonstrated leadership in Burnaby through consistent and outstanding dedication to a community initiative or making their community a better place.
- Burnaby student who is going on to a BC post secondary or vocational training program.
- Consideration is to be given to a student with financial need.
□ Burnaby South War Memorial Honour Roll Bursary (1 @ $950)
- Is a Canadian citizen and is graduating from a Burnaby school
- Has the desire to continue his/her education at a post secondary institution in Canada and has been accepted to attend a post secondary institution
- Continually demonstrates the values associated with good citizenship – caring, sharing and responsibility and a willingness to help others
- Financial need required.
□ Chad Turpin Scholarship (1 @ $2000)

APPLICATION – CHAD TURPIN SCHOLARSHIP
- Maintained a good academic standing
- Is interested in pursuing a career in public administration, public policy or public service
- Demonstrates a need for financial assistance to pursue their education, for example, a student that must secure employment while attending school.
- The recipient will be required to provide proof of enrolment in a qualified program in order to receive their scholarship payment.
□ Parkcrest Children’s Centre Scholarship (1 @ $1000)

- Proof of attendance at Parkcrest Children’s Centre for at least one year (Complete Proof form)
- Enrolled in a Burnaby school for two senior years
- Maintained a good academic standing
- Demonstrates good citizenship and leadership skills
- Actively involved in community service/volunteer work
- Provide evidence of volunteer or work experience, including letters of reference attesting to student’s work ethic
□ Rotary Club of Burnaby Bursary (8 @ $1000)

- has maintained a good academic standing
- has demonstrated good citizenship and strong leadership in school and the community
- has participated in community service and volunteer work in the community
- demonstrates financial need
□ Inter-World Scholarship (8 @ $1000)
CRITERIA – Interworld Development Scholarship
APPLICATION – InterWorld Development Scholarship
- Successfully completed a Youth Train in Trades and Youth Work in Trades program in the Burnaby School District with a high level of effort, determination and integrity
- Successfully completed 120 hours industry-recognized work experience
- Demonstrated a high level of motivation to continue to develop skills and abilities in the chosen profession
- Demonstrated plans to continue in studies in the chosen field at post-secondary or apprenticeship training
- Been nominated for the award by a Youth Train in Trades or Youth Work in Trades program teacher
- Consideration is to be given to a student with financial need.
□ Neil Sandercock Scholarship (1 @ $500)
Neil Sandercock Criteria and Application
- This scholarship is awarded to a graduating student who has suffered a brain injury or has a developmental or psychological impairment with a disability and has not only risen up against the odds, but demonstrated a commitment to continuing their education.
□ Ted Elphick Memorial Bursary (1 @ $100)
- Candidate selected is a Burnaby resident who has, through positive will and spirit, overcome physical or mental challenges to graduate from a Burnaby secondary school.
- Enrolled in a Burnaby school for five years.
- Demonstrated ability and desire to be a life-long learner and continue his or her education at a post-secondary institution or in a recognized training program
□ Coast Capital Savings “Standing Tall” Scholarship – (2 @ $3500)

- Awarded to youth who have faced adversity (eg. poverty, health, family circumstances, personal loss, lack of support – including youth who have been or are in government care)
- demonstrate a commitment to continue their education
- Canadian citizen or permanent resident
- BC resident (for at least 6 months)
- Graduating high school in June 2020
- Planning to attend an accredited Canadian university, college or technical school in Fall of 2020
□ Burnaby Arts Council Scholarship ($200)
CRITERIA – BURNABY ARTS COUNCIL SCHOLARSHIP
APPLICATION – BURNABY ARTS COUNCIL (1)
- Demonstrated excellence and achievement in the arts (performing, visual or literary)
- Exhibited a good academic record with letters of commendation
- Plans to pursue post-secondary studies in the arts leading to a professional status in theatre, dance, visual arts, creative writing or music.
- Consideration will be given to students with financial need.
□ Dawn Harris Memorial Scholarship (1 @ $500)

- Female student who has been enrolled in Burnaby school for two senior years
- Maintained a good academic standing
- Been involved in the school’s athletic program
- Demonstrated outstanding citizenship and strong leadership skills in the school
- Demonstrates plans to continue with education in a post-secondary program
□ Dr. & Mrs. A. H. Pontifex (1 @ $500)
CRITERIA – PONTIFEX SCHOLARSHIP
APPLICATION – PONTIFEX SCHOLARSHIP
- Has maintained good academic standing
- Has taken a concentration of and excelled in, courses in the field of Science
- Has demonstrated good citizenship and strong leadership in school and community
- Has participated in community service and volunteer work in the community
- Has demonstrated a passion for, and interest in, pursuing a career in Science
□ RICOH Office Solutions Scholarship (8 @ $250)
- Must be attending BCIT in the next 2 years (proof of registration required)
- Demonstrated good citizenship
- Actively involved in school service
- Maintained a good academic standing
- Consideration given to a student with financial need
□ BCIT Pathways to Success Awards (2 @ $3000)

APPLICATION – Pathways to Success
- For students planning to enter into full-time studies in technology, technical studies or trade program (excluding Apprentice) directly from high school to BCIT
- To recognize students who are well-rounded citizens, who have displayed leadership qualities, and have demonstrated that they are willing to work hard to achieve their goals
- Commitment and drive are as important as academic standing
□ Marjorie Jane Stephenson – Education Scholarship (2 @ $600)

- Demonstrated an interest in pursuing a career in Health Care
- Demonstrated community service assisting older adults
- One of your reference letters will need to be from the supervisor of the care facility where you volunteered
- Enrolled in a Burnaby school for 2 senior years
- Maintained a good academic standing
- Demonstrated good citizenship and strong leadership skills in the school and community
□ Marlene Larson Scholarship (1 @ $500) ***Note: Please, directly apply to the District Office for this award
- Awarded to a Burnaby graduate who is blind, visually impaired or deaf-blind
- Be planning on enrolling in a post secondary program
- Demonstrate ability to set goals
- Be motivated, show responsibility and be oriented towards independence
