  • Grades 10-12 ELL 3s take English 10 Language Adapted (Literary Studies and Composition)

English 11/12 Semestered

English language learners who have successfully completed English 10 Language Adapted, and are in their graduation year, are eligible to enroll in English 11/12 Semestered. This course combines English 11 (Composition) and English Studies 12. Students will meet every day to complete these two courses, which are required for high school graduation. All content and skills for Composition 11 and English Studies 12 will be included in this course, with a special emphasis on language development.

Students must also enroll in Academic Writing for English Language Learners 11 to support their success in this course.

Academic Writing for English Language Learners 11

Academic Writing 11 is a course designed to support students taking regular English 11 and 12 who want to improve their writing skills, build vocabulary, expand their knowledge of various genres of writing in academic English, and improve their editing skills.  These are students for whom English is a second or additional language, and who test at least at a Level 3 on Burnaby intake assessment rubrics, or at a minimum “Consolidating” on the BC Ministry of Education ELL Standards.  The course content of AW 11 is independent from regular English 11/12 but is designed to support and complement the writing tasks of regular English.  To accomplish this, the course focuses on the register, diction, and syntax most commonly found BC high school academic genres including, but not limited to response genres, expository genres, information texts, and narrative essays.
