Summer Read Alouds

Hi everyone,

I am wishing you all a very happy summer! Thank you for visiting this blog over the last few months. I hope you have enjoyed my stories and posts. I may post a few things over the summer, but not every week.

If you haven’t registered yet, please go to the Burnaby Public Library website and register for the Summer Reading Program. Everything is free and online. You are now able to put books on hold at the library, and pick them up when they are ready. It’s called Paper Bag Pickup!

Please enjoy the videos below!

Happy Summer to you all! I look forward to seeing everyone again in September. Be kind, be calm, be safe! And…Happy Reading, of course!

A Day with Yayah

Hi Everyone,

Today’s story, A Day With Yayah by Nicola I. Campbell, illustrated by Julie Flett, is about a First Nations family that goes on a walk to gather plants to eat. Yayah, the grandmother, explains everything she knows about the world and all the living things around them as the family walks together.

As you listen, take note: Does Yayah talk about any plants that you already know? Are there some plants that you’ve never heard of before? Have you eaten any of the plants that Yayah talks about? **Very important – never eat anything from nature without knowing what it is and asking an adult first!**

This story reminds me of the salmonberry bushes in the trails near my house. As I walk with my family, we always look for the ripe salmonberries so we can have a juicy snack!

Enjoy the story below.

Pride Month

Hi Everyone,

June is Pride Month! For people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and the people who support the LQTBQ community, Pride Month is a time of celebration.

In his book called Rainbow – A First Book of Pride, Michael Genhart says “Rainbows are so colorful and beautiful, nature’s way of smiling at us all. Rainbow flags are happy too. They celebrate love, hope, diversity, and acceptance. Waving the flag says, “This is who I am, and I stand proud!”

In the picture above, I’ve included 5 children’s books that support learning about SOGI (sexual orientation gender identity) themes AND, most importantly, are just GREAT BOOKS about love and diversity. Please click on the book covers to go to a YouTube read aloud of the book. Enjoy.

Happy Reading and Happy Pride!

Lots to Read

Hi everyone,

I am back working at the school, and so I have a bit less time to record read alouds for all of you! I will try my best, but in the meantime…. Here is a bookshelf full of books for you to follow along with.

Click on any of the books on the bookshelf and you will go to a video of that book. Some books are read by their authors and others are read by librarians or teachers like me. Hopefully you will find a story or two that you really enjoy!

Happy Reading 🙂

Hair Love – Read Aloud and Movie

Hi everyone,

With the world talking about diversity and racial equality even more now than ever, I wanted to include a post about a book that I recently read called Hair Love by Matthew A. Cherry, illustrated by Vashti Harrison. This book is about a girl and her dad and their love for each other. It’s also about self-confidence – feeling good about yourself, trying your best, and not giving up. It’s also about HAIR!

From the author,  Matthew A. Cherry’s website: “This story was born out of seeing a lack of representation in mainstream animated projects, and also wanting to promote hair love amongst young men and women of color. It is our hope that this project will inspire.”

This book was made into a 7 minute film that won the 2020 Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.

Below, I’ve included both a read aloud as well as the short movie from YouTube. Enjoy!
