I have summarized all scholarships offered according to their value, general description and deadline in the table HERE.

Please note that Burnaby District Scholarships are in orange.

For these scholarships:

1. You must submit your application to Ms. Falsetto (B110) with all necessary documents. These include:
   1. general scholarship application form HERE.
   2. specific application form (depends on scholarship)
   3. at least three reference letters
   4. statement of financial need (where necessary)
   5. any supporting documents that may assist your application (for example, copies of certificates, pictures of trophies etc)

2. The Byrne Creek Scholarship committee will select our strongest candidate. I (Ms. Falsetto) will then advocate for you at the District Scholarship meeting in April.  This deadline is firm.

3. You will be notified of your application at the Grad Ceremony on May 30th.

Have you ever been in custody with the Ministry for Child and Family Development? If yes, the scholarship opportunity may be for you!

PURPOSE 

The purpose of the Fund is to supplement funding to cover fees, books, maintenance and/or transportation which might otherwise cause the individual affected to terminate his or her studies prematurely.

Annual bursaries are awarded to individuals “who are over the age of 19 years, and have been permanent wards of the Superintendent of Family and Child Service in the Ministry of Social Services and Housing (or its successors), and who meet the criteria deemed appropriate by the Trustee.”

BURSARIES 

Successful applicants are awarded annual bursaries ranging in value up to a maximum of approximately $3,300.00 (amount is indexed annually with the cost of living).

Applications are evaluated on the following criteria:

1. General Eligibility 

An applicant must:

•  be a former permanent ward of the Ministry of Social Services of British Columbia, its predecessor or successor, or have been in continuing custody of the British Columbia Ministry for Children and Family Development under the Child, Family and Community Services Act or predecessor laws;

•  be at least 19 years of age as of the date studies commence;

•  be a high school graduate or equivalent currently enrolled or planning to enroll in a post-secondary academic, technical or vocational program;

•  submit a completed current year application form;

•  provide transcripts from the last year of school attended; and

•  have other sources of funding for the educational year. The bursary shall not be the sole means of support.

(Note: Permanent ward or continuing custody means a child, who by court order, was placed in the permanent or continuing custody of the Province of British Columbia. The custody order terminated when the child attained the age of 19 years, was married prior to attaining the age of 19 years, or the court cancelled the order prior to the child attaining the age of 19 years.)

2. Financial Need 

An applicant must:

•  demonstrate a financial shortfall which might cause the individual to be unable to pursue their studies;

•  have some means of financial support other than the bursary;

•  demonstrate an inability to access additional means of financial support to make up the shortfall; and

•  provide an estimated descriptive budget for the upcoming academic year based on reasonable expenses and reasonable means of financial support.

3. Post Academic Performance 

An applicant must demonstrate:

•  an academic, technical or vocational ability to pursue the intended educational goal;
and

•  an academic, technical or vocational commitment to obtaining the educational goal.

4. Career Goals 

An applicant must demonstrate:

•  a clear career goal;

•  a direct relationship between the educational goal and the career goal;

•  a personal commitment to the career goal (e.g., related education to date, related volunteer experience, related work experience, or references from educators, counsellors or field workers); and

•  personal suitability to the chosen career (e.g., references from educators, career counselors, or field workers).

HOW TO APPLY 

The deadline for applications for each year is April 15th. Applications received after April 15th will NOT qualify for bursary consideration.

The awards promote the development of intercultural knowledge and understanding in support of BC’s new education curriculum and contribute to the goals of the British Columbia International Education Strategy, increasing the two-way flow of students, teachers and ideas between BC and the world.

Eligibility Criteria
In order to be eligible for nomination by a school district or independent school, the international student must meet all of the following criteria:

• Be accepted for first-time entry into a BC public or independent school at the Grade 9, 10, or 11 level for the 2017/2018 school year
• Be of school age (no older than 19 by June 30, 2017)
• Be nominated by a BC school district or independent school
• Hold a valid passport from the People’s Republic of China, Japan or the Republic of Korea

The Howard Legacy Youth Fund and the AFABC Youth Bursary are offered once per year at $1,000 each. The deadline for both is April 30, 2017.

• The Howard Legacy Youth Fund was established with a donation from Peggy Howard in 2012, and is made available to applicants who are current or former youth in care.
• AFABC Youth Bursary was established in 2014, with funding from the Adoptive Families Association of BC, and accepts applications from youth who have joined their family by legal adoption.

Completed applications will be accepted, by mail or electronic delivery, until midnight on April 30, 2017. No late applicants will be considered. Winners will be announced June 1, 2017.

All approved applications, (completed, meeting all eligibility requirements and submitted on time) will be forwarded for an initial screening process. The strongest applicants will be presented to the selection committee. Bursary applicants can apply for either (or both) AFABC bursary fund, but may only be chosen for one award per year.

$2500 Standing Tall Award

Awarded to youth who have faced adversity and have not only risen up against the odds, but are demonstrating a commitment to continue their education. This award is open to students who have faced challenges like poverty, health, family issues, personal loss and lack of support.  Please note that we have had Byrne students receive this award in the past… it is in your reach! Your story of determination deserves to be celebrated.

St. Mark’s is the Catholic Theological College at the University of British Columbia.
