Dear Byrne Creek Graduates,
Please review the criteria and apply for the awards that best suit you! Speak to your references this week to ask for a reference letter. Take time over Spring Break to prepare your applications. If nothing else, completing the application questions is a great self-reflection activity!
In order to apply, you:
- must complete a GENERAL Burnaby Scholarship application form HERE
- must complete a SPECIFIC application for the scholarship in which you are applying
- are asked to NOT use staples. Please use paperclips, where necessary. (This saves a lot of time when photocopies must be made for the committee members.)

- Maintained a good academic standing

Burnaby Arts Council Scholarship $200
- demonstrated excellence and achievement in the arts (performing, visual or literary) in school curricular and extra-curricular programs and the motivation to develop their ability. Additional consideration will be given for community involvement.

Burnaby Civic Employee’s – CUPE Local 23 Scholarship $500
- Must be attending a BC post-secondary or vocational school
- Maintained a good academic standing
- Demonstrated good citizenship in school and the community
- Participated in volunteer activities

Burnaby South War Memorial Honour Roll Bursary – $ amount TBD
- be a Canadian citizen and have graduated from a School District 41 secondary school;
- have the desire to continue his/her education at a post secondary institution in Canada and
- have been accepted to attend a post secondary institution;

Coast Capital Savings Standing Tall Award $3,500
- Awarded to youth who have faced adversity and have not only risen up against the odds, but are demonstrating a commitment to continue their education
- Open to students who have faced challenges like poverty, health, family issues, personal loss and lack of support.
- How does the application system work? The Byrne Creek Scholarship Committee will select one candidate to represent our school
- Ms. Falsetto will strongly advocate for you at the Burnaby District Scholarship meeting
- You will be notified if you are the recipient before Friday, April 12th
- This has been awarded to Byrne Creek students for at least the past three years

Interworld Development Inc. Scholarship – $1000
To be considered for the award the student must have:
- successfully completed a Youth Train in Trades and Youth Work in Trades program in the Burnaby School District with a high level of effort, determination and integrity
- successfully completed 120 hours industry-recognized work experience
- demonstrated a high level of motivation to continue to develop skills and abilities in the chosen profession
- demonstrated plans to continue in studies in the chosen field at post-secondary or apprenticeship training
- been nominated for the award by a Youth Train in Trades or Youth Work in Trades program teacher

Marjorie Jane Stephenson – Education Scholarship $450
- Demonstrated community service assisting older adults (excluding work experience)
- You will need a verification of volunteer hours letter on letter head from the supervisor of the care facility where you volunteered
- Demonstrated an interest in pursuing a career in Health Care
- Maintained a good academic standing
- Demonstrated good citizenship and strong leadership skills in the school and community

Marlene Larson Scholarship ($ amount TBD)
- Awarded to a Burnaby graduate who is blind, visually impaired or deaf-blind
- Be planning on enrolling in a post secondary program
- Demonstrate ability to set goals
- Be motivated, show responsibility and be oriented towards independence

Michael J. Fox Visual & Performing Arts Scholarship (specific $ TBD, $15,000 available)
- Currently enrolled in a visual or performing arts course in a Burnaby secondary school.
- Documentation to demonstrate your interest, dedication and aptitude in an arts or in multiple arts disciplines, e.g. dance, drama, music, visual art, theatre, script writing, stagecraft, directing, media arts.
- Evidence of your financial need and an explanation of why there are no other financial resources available to you.
- Demonstrated school and/or community involvement
- Your intent to pursue study at a post-secondary institution in an arts or arts-related area.

Parkcrest Children’s Centre Scholarship – $ amount TBD
- Must have attended Parkcrest Children’s Centre for at least one year (Complete Proof form HERE)
- Maintained a good academic standing
- Provide evidence of volunteer or work experience
- Participated and actively involved in school and community and/or volunteer activities
- Demonstrated good citizenship and leadership skills

Dr. & Mrs. A. H. Pontifex $500
- Has maintained a good academic standing
- Has taken a concentration of, and excelled in, courses in the field of Science
- Has demonstrated good citizenship and strong leadership in school and the community
- Has participated in community service and volunteer work in the community
- Has demonstrated a passion for, and interest in, pursuing a career in Science
- The recipient of the Pontifex Scholarship often has many experiences in Science including volunteer opportunities, science projects, and a very high standing in several science courses

- Candidate selected should be a Burnaby resident who has, through will and spirit, overcome physical or mental challenges to graduate from a Burnaby secondary school.
- Must have been enrolled in a Burnaby school for five years.
- Demonstrated ability and desire to be a life long learner and continue his or her education at a post secondary institution or in a recognized training program

Michael J. Fox Scholarship for Visual Arts: deadline Friday, April 6th, 2018
- AWARD CRITERIAYour letter of application must include the following information:
- Confirmation that you are currently enrolled in a visual or performing arts course in a Burnaby secondary school.
- Documentation to demonstrate your interest, dedication and aptitude in an arts or in multiple arts disciplines, e.g. dance, drama, music, visual art, theatre, script writing, stagecraft, directing, media arts.
- Evidence of your financial need and an explanation of why there are no other financial resources available to you.
- A history of your school and/or community involvement (i.e. school productions, student government, choir member, volunteer work, charity work, service clubs).
- A copy of your secondary school transcript to demonstrate that your grades are high enough for acceptance to a post-secondary educational institution.
- A statement that indicates your desired post-secondary Degree or Certificate in an Arts discipline and your Career Goal.

BURNABY DISTRICT SCHOLARSHIPS AND BURSARIES CRITERIA
The following district bursaries/scholarships are available for Burnaby Secondary School Graduates and are valued from $100-$2500. You may apply for more than one of the following scholarships as long as you meet the stated criteria.
Please READ the specific criteria for each scholarship or bursary before you apply. All applications must be submitted to Ms. Falsetto before Friday, April 6th, 2018. Please remember: NO STAPLES, ONLY PAPERCLIPS where necessary.
All of these applications require a “cover” application form HERE. Then, attach the information that the scholarship requires.

- Passionate about sports and committed to the spirit of “teamwork”
- Has been involved in school and/or community sports as a player, manager or other contributing role e.g. Referee
- Has demonstrated having a positive influence in school and/or community through dedication & hard work
- Exemplify strong character demonstrating personal responsibility and respect for others
- Demonstrated plans to continue with education in a post secondary program
- Priority given to students who have financial need… explain your situation (ex. single-income home…)

Louella Downing Visual Arts Scholarship $1000
- Maintain a good academic standing
- Demonstrated excellence in a minimum of two senior Visual Arts or Textiles courses

- Submit 8-10 photographs of original art work illustrating a range of subjects and media
