COURSES OFFERED TO CHALLENGE

• French 11 or 12
• German 11 or 12
  • Important Notice for German Language Challenge Exams:  Due to consistent low enrollment it has been decided that 2017/2018 will be the last year that German 11/12 exams will be offered.
• Japanese 11 or 12
• Korean 11 or 12
• Mandarin 11 or 12
• Punjabi 11 or 12
• Spanish 11 or 12

If you would like to complete a Language Challenge Exam, you MUST complete the following:

1. Download the Language Challenge Exam Application (2017-18) and fill it out completely
   • ​You need to complete pages 9, 10 & 11 online before you print out the application and bring it to me
2. Attach a cheque for $50 (which will be refunded once you complete the Challenge exam) made out to: Delta School District
   • ​You must also print your full name, school and course you are challenging on the back of the cheque
   • FYI….If you fail to show up to your exam, then your $50 deposit will NOT be refunded
   • Note:  all International Students need to submit a $175.00 as a non-refundable fee for exams
3. Attach a recent, original photo of you (can be passport type or school photo)
   • ​​ It MUST be an actual picture picture
     • if you do not have an actual physical picture, then go get a Passport photo done and bring one of those
   • It CANNOT be a photocopy of a picture
   • ​​It CANNOT include anybody else in the picture (ie; friends, family, pets)
4. Submit the COMPLETED Application Package to Ms. Fenn (in Student Services, room C118) no later than Monday, October 23^rd
5. Exam dates are either: January 27th or 28th, 2018 – in DELTA SCHOOL DISTRICT

♦  NOTE: All universities in Canada accept our Language Challenge exam marks. UBC accepts Challenge credits for pre-requisite and requirements for courses and second-language requirements but does not accept Challenge marks as part of the GPA calculation for admission. It is highly recommended that you check with your intended university for their admissions requirements.

• Please encourage Grade 12 students to complete the Online PSI Selections Form if they are applying to a PSI this school year.

• Note the deadline dates for students to make their selections:

• Interim deadline is May 4
• Final deadline is July 14

Below is a summer opportunity for high school students. This program is presented by Genome BC, a non-profit research organization based in Vancouver that invests in genomics research throughout BC. Geneskool is the education outreach component of Genome BC. Every summer, Geneskool presents this summer program at Capilano University in North Vancouver.

Genome BC – Geneskool Summer Science Program for Teens

This week-long day program offers students that have completed Science 9 or higher a unique opportunity to explore aspects of biotechnology, genomics, inheritance, virology, forensics and microbiology and use their new knowledge to solve a puzzling mystery. Hosted at Capilano University in North Vancouver, students will participate in a variety of hands-on labs using state-of-the-art lab facilities and learn the molecular biology techniques that scientists use every day. In addition to labs, students have an opportunity to tour the campus, hear from fascinating guest speakers, and explore potential education and career paths. One Girl Can is an organization that presented to our Youth and Community Services Committee. They are a charitable organization that provides an opportunity for Canadian students to fundraise for girls in Africa.

One Girl Can connects students graduating from schools in Canada (Grade 12 grad and Grade 7 transition to high school) with their equivalent in Africa to help them achieve a similar educational standard that will open doors to opportunity.

How it works:

• Students sponsor girls their age in Africa
• Work to fundraise for that student
• $500 for secondary school scholarships
• $3500 for university scholarships
• One Girl Can connects them to a fundraising opportunity if they wish to use it:
  • AG Hair provides shampoo – at below cost – $10
  • Students sell shampoo ($35 I believe) to friends/neighbours
  • 100% of profits go to scholarships for secondary school and university scholarships in Africa
