Sulwe Read Aloud and Black Shirt Day

Hello everyone,

“On January 15th, students and educators across BC will wear black shirts to commemorate the ongoing struggle for civil and human rights fought by Black and racialized Canadians. At ARC (Anti-Racism Coalition) we believe Black Shirt Day is an important step in raising greater awareness of the civil rights struggle, and help foster solidarity against all forms of racism and hate.” (from ARC flier, @arc.vancouver).

Below is a read aloud of the book Sulwe read by its author, Lupita Nyong’o. Sulwe is a great story to start discussions about racism and diversity. Sulwe is a little girl whose classmates make fun of her dark skin. Throughout the story Sulwe (and us, as readers) learn and understand that all skin colours are beautiful, and beauty is inside a person as well as outside.

I hope you enjoy this story as much as I did! It makes me think of all the beautiful people and skin colours at Nelson school, and how each and every person is important to our school community. Making fun of others for their skin colour (or anything) is unacceptable, and we, at Nelson, treat everyone with respect.

Happy Reading,

Mrs. Roberts

Ted Staunton – Author Talk Intro

Hi everyone,

On Wednesday, November 18, Nelson Intermediate classes will be having a Zoom talk with Canadian children’s book author, Ted Staunton. Ted has written many kids books, including picture books, novels, and non-fiction titles. Ted’s website is www.tedstauntonbooks.com if you’d like more information about him.

He has recorded a video for us to watch before we meet him. Please watch the video HERE

In the video, Ted mentions 4 questions for us to think about:

1.) If you could have any superpower, which one would you choose?

2.) What are 3 things that you need to BEGIN any story?

3.) Which of these Canadian delicacies was NOT invented at a fall fair?

a.) pulled pork cinnamon rolls                  b.) Hawaiian Pizza

c.)  corn dog poutine                  d.) deep fried butter

4.) When a blizzard hit Vancouver in January 2020, one Vancouverite was filmed shoveling snow with which of the following:

a.) frying pan                b.) spatula               c.)  folding lawn chair                  d.) Zamboni

Pride Month

Hi Everyone,

June is Pride Month! For people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and the people who support the LQTBQ community, Pride Month is a time of celebration.

In his book called Rainbow – A First Book of Pride, Michael Genhart says “Rainbows are so colorful and beautiful, nature’s way of smiling at us all. Rainbow flags are happy too. They celebrate love, hope, diversity, and acceptance. Waving the flag says, “This is who I am, and I stand proud!”

In the picture above, I’ve included 5 children’s books that support learning about SOGI (sexual orientation gender identity) themes AND, most importantly, are just GREAT BOOKS about love and diversity. Please click on the book covers to go to a YouTube read aloud of the book. Enjoy.

Happy Reading and Happy Pride!

Lots to Read

Hi everyone,

I am back working at the school, and so I have a bit less time to record read alouds for all of you! I will try my best, but in the meantime…. Here is a bookshelf full of books for you to follow along with.

Click on any of the books on the bookshelf and you will go to a video of that book. Some books are read by their authors and others are read by librarians or teachers like me. Hopefully you will find a story or two that you really enjoy!

Happy Reading 🙂

The Ickabog – A New Story from J.K. Rowling

Calling all J.K. Rowling fans! The author of the Harry Potter book series has written a new story for kids…it’s called The Ickabog. She is releasing a few chapters each day online so you can enjoy reading the story bit by bit.

This story is not about Hogwarts, wizards, and spells… but I think it is still magical. J.K. Rowling really knows how to tell a story! If you are interested, you can read The Ickabog HERE

Also, if you love to draw, paint, create art… there is an illustration contest for this book! See details on the website, https://www.theickabog.com/home/  and maybe you can have your artwork included in a J.K. Rowling book!

As always, Happy Reading!

Nature walks and rocks

Hi Nelson students,

My family and I love going for nature walks. We also love painting. We decided to paint some rocks and release them into the wilderness and hopefully make other people smile. Here are a few photos of our rocks on our favourite hiking trail.

A special hello to Ms. Tsakalos’s class, especially if you are visiting this blog for the first time. It made me smile when Ms. Tsakalos shared her photo of a spider on a tulip with me. Did you see the spider?! I’ve included her photo below too.

Hope you are able to get outside and notice all of the beautiful sights in nature!

After Spring Break

Hello Nelson Students and Families,

I miss you! I am so sorry that I am not able to see you here at the library right now. I wish I had sent everyone home with 100 books before Spring Break! I hope that you all are doing well at home, and I look forward to seeing everyone sometime soon.

You all know how much I love reading and books, and I’m always trying to share that love of reading with you. If you have books at home, please read, read, read! It’s even ok to read the same book over and over again.

I will be updating this blog frequently to give you some other reading options. Stay tuned for online reading suggestions in the future, but for now I will include the link to Tumblebooks. This website has some awesome read alouds and online books for kids of all grade levels. Check it out here !

Also, keep recording on your Book Beast sheets. When you finish a sheet, you can take a photo and email it to me at Heather.Roberts@burnabyschools.ca.

I’d love to know how you are doing. You can respond to this post in the comments or send me an email. I will respond to all comments and emails that I receive.

Take care everyone. Try to get outside for some fresh air and escape into a good book!

Talk to you soon,

Mrs. Roberts
