Oct. 1 – 5, 2012 Read-a-Louds

This week we have 2 brand new books to read.

      Olivia and the Fairy Princesses

The Kindergarteners and Grade 1’s will be reading the new Llama Llama book, Llama Llama Time To Share, by Anna Dewdney. The beginning of the school year, when new friends are made, is a good time to review sharing. Llama Llama meets his new neighbour, Nelly Gnu, and she comes over for a visit. At first Llama Llama doesn’t want to share, but both characters learn a valuable lesson. Visit Llama Llama’s website for fun educational games and activities.

Grade 2’s and grade 3’s will be reading the latest installment of Olivia the Pig, in Olivia and the Fairy Princesses, by Ian Falconer. Olivia is a different pig, and she likes to stand out amongst the crowd. All the other girls want to be fairy princesses when they grow up, but not Olivia. This is a story about individuality. Visit Olivia’s website for more fun.

New Books for January 2012

Tons of new books to start off the year! Stop by the Library to have a look; all new books will be on display during the second week of January, and will be available for check-out after 3:00pm on Thursday, January 12th. Ms. Lehnert likes to display all new books for several days so that all students and teachers have a chance at seeing what is being added to the Library collection.

Read-a-Louds Nov 28 – Dec 2

During this week, Primary classes will either be reading Stars by Mary Lyn Ray or will have guest readers from Division 3 (French Imm. grade 6/7). Guest readers from Division 3 will be reading their own creations – fractured fairy tales. Fractured fairy tales are based on traditional fairy tales, but they contain many differences: the plot, characters, setting or viewpoint can be different, among many other elements.

Stars, illustrated beautifully by Marla Frazee, “explores the wonder of stars, whether they are in the night sky, on a plant as a promise of fruit to come, or in one’s pocket for those days when one does not feel shiny.”

For info on Division 3’s fractured fairy tales, stay tuned…

The Library officially opens on Monday, Sept. 19th, for classroom visits and activities. See you then!
