Math Talks, Carole Fullerton and Blog Updates

Math and Number Talks are a great strategy to get students working on the communication competencies and computational fluency in Math.  They can be applied from K-12 (and beyond). California teacher Fawn Nguyen has compiled a great list of resources for this strategy.  Have you started using it? Comment by clicking the bubble above.

Carole Fullerton

Carole Fullerton’s visit to Burnaby is starting to fill up.  There are still places in the morning intermediate session and a few spots in the primary session.  Sign up now at the staff development calendar.

New on the Blog

If you check out New Curriculum Support from the tabs above, you find that the one column rubrics outlining curricular competencies have been completed for K-9.  Also, info from the Curriculum Implementation Day at Burnaby Mountain has been shared as well.

I’m new to this role…

A Bit About Me

New Math/Science Consultant Donna Morgan

As of September 25, I have started as the new District Math/Science Program Consultant.  I’m really looking forward to working with teachers from K-12 (and adult educators) across Burnaby.

For those of you who don’t know me, I’ve been a science and math teacher in Burnaby for 27 years.  I’ve worked at 3 (and a bit) secondary schools, teaching math from 8-11 and science (from 8-12). I’ve spent the last 3 years as a Faculty Associate at SFU, supporting student teachers from K-12.  I’ve got a great admiration for primary teachers (particularly K). Besides my strong interests in math and science, I am passionate about assessment and inquiry.  I also consider myself an environmentalist and a social justice advocate.

If you would like to collaborate on your math or science program, or are looking for some tips and resources, feel free to e-mail me (donna.morgan@sd41.bc.ca) or call at 604-760-6157. Or you can follow me on Twitter @donnamorgan8.

Looking for Something To Do on October 20?

If you weren’t able to apply for detached duty or are looking for something other than the Superconference (which is where you can find me on Oct 20), here are a list of things you can do in math and science on our Provincial Professional Development Day:

BC Association of Math Teachers

Vandusen Garden Inspiring Environmental Awareness

Harbour Cruise By Minerals Ed

Copper Mountain (Near Princeton—day trip from the Lower Mainland)

Beatty Museum at UBC

Drawing nature at Van Dusen

Grouse Mountain—nature and AbEd

DreamBox Math Software – application

dreamboxDreamBox is an online Math resource (K-8) intended to support personalized instruction for students from intervention to enrichment.  Some of our schools have recently been using the program in pilot and can share their stories. A small number of purchased student licenses will be available for 2016/17. Teachers who are interested may apply on the Burnaby school district FORMS page.

Also, skoolbologoSkoolbo (Canadian version) is now available for those who are seeking practice in basic skills in Math or Literacy (building blocks). This is an online resource that provides a “game type” environment to practice basic skills. Create an avatar and the program can take you through the skillsets (based on a set of pre-tests) or a teacher can assign specific content that practice is needed. We’ve already registered all schools (elementary and secondary). Teachers who are interested may apply on the Burnaby school district FORMS page.
