Rotary Club Community Leadership Scholarship – $1000

Rotary Club of Burnaby – Deer Lake is accepting applications for its Community Leadership Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to be awarded to a successful applicant.

Criteria: Rotary-Scholarship-Criteria—2020

  • demonstrated good citizenship and strong leadership skills.
  • been actively involved in community service and / or volunteer work.
  • been actively involved in youth initiatives, activities and events in the Burnaby community.
  • been actively involved in school-based activities; and
  • actively pursuing relevant school coursework.

Michael J. Fox Visual and Performing Arts Scholarship

MJF scholarship info and application 2020

1. QUALIFICATIONS – You must be a student graduating from a Burnaby secondary school at the end of the 2019-2020 school year. You must be a Canadian citizen or Landed Immigrant.

2. AWARD – Scholarships will be awarded at the discretion of the selection committee.

3. AWARD CRITERIA – Your letter of application must include the following information:

  • Confirmation that you are currently enrolled in a visual or performing arts course in a Burnaby secondary school.
  • Documentation to demonstrate your interest, dedication and aptitude in an arts or in multiple arts disciplines, e.g. dance, drama, music, visual art, theatre, script writing, stagecraft, directing, media arts.
  • A statement of any financial challenges you are facing in pursuit of postsecondary arts education.
  • A history of your school and/or community involvement (i.e. school productions, student government, choir member, volunteer work, charity work, service clubs).
  • A copy of your secondary school transcript to demonstrate that your grades are high enough for acceptance to a post-secondary educational institution.
  • A statement that indicates your desired post-secondary Degree or Certificate in an Arts discipline and your Career Goal.

4. DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION  – Your complete package must be submitted to Ms. McChesney in A100 by April 3, 2020.

5. A photo of each successful scholarship recipient will be displayed on the MJFT website as well as during the MJFT Golf & Gala presentation.

THE BARRY SULLIVAN LAW CUP 2020

The Canadian Bar Association BC Branch will host the Barry Sullivan Law Cup on Wednesday, April 8th 2020 at the Museum of Vancouver. The Barry Sullivan Law Cup is a province-wide public speaking competition honouring the memory of Barry Sullivan and his contributions to both the legal and educational professions. Finalists will be judged by esteemed professionals and, in previous years, have included Judges from the Courts in British Columbia and representatives from UBC and the media. Students in Grades 10, 11 and 12 from all regions of B.C. are encouraged to compete.

Due the popularity of this event, we request that schools limit their registrants to a maximum of four students. We will gladly accept additional names to be placed on a wait list. We encourage you to engage your students in this event by holding a run-off competition.  Below is the application form and competition rules.

Attention Athletes!

Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame Scholarship – $1000

Since it was incorporated in 1892, Burnaby has produced many fine athletes. The Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame was formed in 2001 to honour Burnaby’s past athletic excellence. The Hall also encourages future excellence in athletics, academics and sportsmanship by offering $1,000 scholarships to a male athlete and a female athlete from Burnaby.

Deadline for applications to be received at that address is April 15 2020. Winners will be notified by May 15, 2020 and invited to our induction banquet in February 2021Å.

Eligibility requirements:

• A graduating Grade 12 student enrolled at a B.C. secondary school (public or private). Priority will be given to those attending school in Burnaby

• A resident of Burnaby for at least the past three years

• Future plans to attend a post-secondary institution on a full-time basis

• Show evidence of high athletic ability and performance

• Maintain a minimum of a C+ average (a copy of the most recent transcript must be included)

• Demonstrated leadership

• Be active in school and community Important notes:

• A cover letter summarizing your athletic achievements along with your post-secondary athletic/ academic goals and plans must be included with your application.

• Letters of support referencing school, community or athletic participation will enhance your application

Lumen Society Scholarship – $1000

LUMEN Society is proud to announce that we will once again be offering a $1000 scholarship to a 2020 high school graduate. The LUMEN Scholarship will be awarded to a high school graduate who has been impacted by invisible illnesses. Applications are now open and will close on March 30, 2020 at midnight.

Invisible illnesses are health conditions that are not visibly apparent, including mental health conditions, autoimmune diseases, and learning disabilities. This scholarship is open to people who have been impacted by invisible illnesses in any way. Whether you have an invisible illness yourself or someone in your life has an invisible illness that has impacted you, you are eligible to apply.

City of Burnaby Bursary – $1000

A bursary award of $1,000 shall be awarded to one student in each public secondary school in Burnaby each year, and shall be based on established eligibility criteria which includes community service and financial need.

Each Burnaby public secondary school shall nominate three potential bursary award recipients based on established eligibility criteria, and shall complete and return the Nomination Forms to the City of Burnaby Mayor’s Office by May 1.

To be eligible for a City of Burnaby Bursary, students must meet the following criteria:

• Be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of the City of Burnaby;

• Be in Grade 12 and eligible to graduate (within the year of application) from a public secondary school in Burnaby School District 41;

• Be accepted to a program of studies at a post-secondary institution in Canada, such as universities, community colleges, technical schools – proof of registration in a minimum of three courses in a post-secondary institution shall be required before any bursary award payment is made to a recipient;

• Preference will be given to a student who has participated in a community program prior to graduating and can demonstrate outstanding community involvement and volunteerism; and,

• Students who demonstrate financial need (family income below $50,000) will be given priority.

Coast Capital Savings Standing Tall Award – $3500

The Standing Tall Award is awarded to youth who have faced adversity and have not only risen up against the odds, but are demonstrating a commitment to continue their education. This award is open to students who have faced challenges like poverty, health, family issues, personal loss and lack of support.

BC School Sports Scholarships reward excellence in both scholastic and athletic pursuits.  The successful applicants will be student-athletes who have balanced their high academic achievements with significant success as school athletes and contributions to their community.

Scholarships shall be awarded to students enrolled in member schools who apply, and who meet all of the criteria.
