The Burnaby Optimist Club

The Burnaby Optimist Club is an affiliated service organization carrying the motto Friend of Youth”. Since 1994 the Burnaby Optimist Club has donated over $150,000 and committed thousands of volunteer hours of service to community events and projects.

 

Application Requirements

  • A resume outlining the community groups/organization/activities you have been and are currently involved with – provide details of position (s) held and list any awards received
  • A current transcript of your grades
  • One letter of reference from a representative of an organization of an organization you are currently involved with
  • One additional reference letter from an individual who represent a different organization – preferably one that you are still involved with
  • A complete application form

2016 Student on Ice Arctic Expedition

The student on Ice is an award-winning organization offering unique educational expeditions to the Antarctic and the Arctic. We are thrilled to announce that thanks to the generous support of our many partners and supporters, numerous scholarships are available for interested youth  They are now accepting applications for the 2016 Students on Ice Arctic Expedition.

The 16th annual Students on Ice Arctic Expedition will be a profound hands-on experience for youth to expand their knowledge of the changing circumpolar world, foster a new understanding and respect for the planet, and gain the inspiration and motivation needed to help lead us to a healthy and sustainable future.

Activities will include wildlife encounters, visits to remote Arctic communities, as well as the opportunity to acquire first-hand knowledge and insight into the dynamics of climate change, traditional Inuit knowledge, scientific research, policy, and other important Arctic and global issues.

The expedition will involve 120 youth from around the world along with a team of world-class scientists, Inuit Elders, educators, artists, musicians, CEO’s, dignitaries, journalists, authors, and innovators. Students will develop a deeper connection to nature and the inspiration, education and motivation to become leaders in their community and beyond.

The expedition dates are July 21 to August 05, 2016. The expedition begin in Ottawa, ON and will travel together to Kuujjuaq, QC and sail through the eastern Canadian Arctic and western Greenland.

2016 Union of National Employees BC/YK High School Bursary

The Union of National Employees’ (UNE) high school scholarships are designed to highlight union principles, as well as promote the union and the labour movement in a positive way. The scholarships aim to create awareness of this union within high schools and provide financial assistance to worthy students. This initiative will encourage youth to become more involved in union activity or social justice activities.
Here is the criteria:

  • A Scholarship is offered to a high school student in each of the Union of National
    Employees’ regions.
  • This scholarship is intended for full-time or part-time study at a post-secondary
    institution.
  • Applicants must submit a completed application form to the Union of National
    Employees no later than March 31. They must also submit a 1200 to 1500-word
    essay detailing how the union movement has helped to build the social values that
    Canadians hold dear.
  • In reviewing essays, passion, content and knowledge of the subject matter are part of the evaluation criteria.
  • The scholarships will be awarded in each of the Union of National Employees
    respective regions.
  • Recipients must provide proof of registration before a cheque will be released to
    them.

Coast Capital Savings

The Coast Capital Savings, knows that paying for an education can be challenging. It can be especially challenging for youth who’ve faced more than their share of personal hurdles. That’s why they created the Youth Get It Education Awards. This year they are offering two awards, Standing Tall Award and the Beth Hutchinson Award.

For 2016, we’re offering at total of 60 Education Awards, as follows:

Standing Tall Award
59 Awards of $2500 Available
Our Standing Tall Awards support youth who have faced adversity and not only risen up against the odds, but are demonstrating a commitment to continue their education. This award is open to students who have faced challenges like poverty, health issues, family issues, personal loss, or lack of supports (for example, youth who are or who have been in government care).
Beth Hutchinson Award
One $5000 Award Available
One individual will be selected to receive the Beth Hutchinson Award.  This award recognizes the young person in Surrey who best exemplified a commitment to continuing their education in the face of considerable health challenges.

Beth was an inspirational Standing Tall winner in 2012, and we’re honouring her memory by making the Beth Hutchinson Award available to a student from her home community of Surrey, BC.

To be eligible to receive an award, students must not have previously received an Education Award from us, and be:

  • A Canadian Citizen or permanent resident
  • A BC resident (for at least 6 months)
  • Graduating high school in June 2016 from one of 24 School Districts (see attached) in Metro Vancouver, Fraser Valley, mid and southern Vancouver Island and Kelowna
  • Planning to attend an accredited Canadian university, college or technical school in Fall 2016

TRIUMF High School Fellowship

Since 2004, the Fellowship program is for students who will enter the
first year of a full-time science undergraduate degree program. The
Fellowship includes an award of $3,000 and a six-week summer research
position at TRIUMF, Canada’s National Laboratory for Particle and
Nuclear Physics.  Three or more fellowships are awarded each year to
students graduating from the BC secondary school system.

Two students from each secondary school who show an excellence in their science studies can be nominated for this scholarship. Those who are interested in getting this scholarship must fill up the application form and hand in at Room B 102 no later than March 10, 2016. Nominees will be notified regarding their nomination by March 30, 2016.

Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame Scholarship

The Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame will be awarding $1,000 scholarships to encourage future excellence in athletics, academics and sportsmanship. One male and one female athlete will be chosen from the applicants and be awarded with the scholarship.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • A graduating Grade 12 student enrolled at a B.C. secondary school (public or private). Priority will be given to those attending school in Burnaby
  • A resident of Burnaby for the past three years
  • Future plans to attend a post-secondary institution on a full-time basis]
  • Show evidence of high athletic ability and performance
  • Maintain a minimum of C+ average (please include copy of transcript)
  • Demonstrate leadership
  •  Be active in school and community

IMPORTANT NOTE: With the application form, applicants must also submit a short cover letter summarizing your athletic endeavours and post-secondary athletic and academic goals and plans.

BC Excellence Scholarships

Important Notice To High Achieving Students of Byrne!!!

BC EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIP

The province of British Columbia is launching a new scholarship for the 2015/2016 school year. 55 students currently enrolled in their last year of high school studies in British Columbia will be given recognition through this scholarship. Winners will have demonstrated community service, both inside and outside their schools, and shown aptitude and commitment to their chosen career paths. They will receive a $5000 scholarship voucher to use for post-secondary tuition.

Only one (1) student from each school can be nominated for the award.

Nominees must:

  • Be enrolled in or graduated from a B.C. Grade 12 graduation program
  • Be eligible for a BC Certificate of Graduation (Dogwood Diploma) by August 31st of the school year in which they are nominated
  • Have at least a:
    • “B” (73% or above) in their Language Arts 11 final mark
    • “B” average in Grade 11 final course marks that fulfill graduation requirements of Science 11, Math 11 and Social Studies 11, with no more than one “C+” (67% or above) final course mark, (marks lower than “C+” are not accepted)
  • Maintain a “B” average in Grades 11 and 12 final course marks required for graduation
  • Submit a resume
  • Provide two references, one from their community and one from their school
  • Provide a written statement (maximum 500 words) describing:
    • What lead them to their community service, volunteer activity, and/or leadership role
    • What they learned from this involvement
    • How these skills/experiences will benefit them in their chosen career path

Students who wish to be considered for nomination must let Ms. Fujiki know by Monday, February 29th. Students interested in being nominated must have already handed in a completed Student Profile Sheet. Students must also submit the required written statement, resume and application form no later than February 29, 2016 in Room B 102.The school’s Scholarships Committee will nominate the candidate and the nominee will be notified on March 2, 2016.

Students who are being admitted to Kwantlen Polytechnic University for the first time in the Fall 2016 term are invited to apply for entrance scholarships and award.  There are over 18 different scholarships ranging between $1,000 – $20,000 available for students who have shown excellence in different areas during their high school years. KPU offers two types:

Royal Arch Masonic Home Education Scholarship

The scholarship is awarded to a well-rounded student who seeks a career in Health Care and while maintaining a good academic standing, has demonstrated good citizenship and leadership skills through voluntary participation in assisting older adults in the community. Two scholarships in the amount of $250.00 each will be awarded annually to graduating students from the Burnaby School District.

To be considered for the award the student should have:

  • been enrolled in a Burnaby school for the two (2) senior years
  • maintained a good academic standing
  • demonstrated an interest in pursuing a career in Health Care
  • demonstrated community service assisting older adults
  • demonstrated good citizenship and strong leadership skills in the school and the community (excluding work experience)
  • formally submitted an application form to Burnaby School District’s Scholarship Committee
