Youth Ambassadors Program – 3 week exchange to the US: deadline Thursday, March 30th

The goals of this program are to promote mutual understanding between the US and Canada, increase leadership skills, and position youth to make a difference in their communities.  All travel expenses are covered by the Youth Ambassadors Program.

Youth Applicant Requirements:

  • Canadian citizen
  • 15 to 18 years old
  • At least 4 months of high school or CEGEP remaining (no June 2017 grads)
  • Demonstrated interest in the United States
  • Commitment to implement community service project
  • Interested in home stay experience

Reminder: Apply for the Rotary “Adventures in…” Experiences: deadline Feb. 9th

The Rotary Club of Burnaby is proud to participate in a number of Adventure programs established by other Rotary clubs. These adventures take place throughout the country and are an opportunity for youth to showcase their talent, learn from industry professionals and an opportunity to further career opportunities. The club covers the registration and travel cost of the participant. The organizing Rotary Club arranges for the students to be Billeted with a host family. All other personal expenses are the responsibility of the student.

Deadline to apply for all of these is Thursday, February 9th.  All application forms and info are attached to the links. These have a $1500 value and travel experience.  Apply.

UNESON High School Scholarships: $1000 for students who explain how the value of the union movement help build social values — deadline March 31st

Union of National Employees High School Scholarship:

The scholarships is designed to highlight union principles, as well as promote union and the labour movement in a positive way. The scholarship aim to create awareness of our union within high schools and provide financial assistance to worthy students. This initiative will encourage youth to become more involved in union activity or social justice activities.

PATHWAY TO SUCCESS AWARDS

BCIT Pathway to Success Awards are for students planning to enter into a full-time first year technology, technical studies or trade program (excluding Apprentice) directly from high school.

The intent of these awards is to recognize students who are well-rounded citizens, who have displayed leadership qualities, and have demonstrated that they are willing to work hard to achieve their goals. Commitment and drive are as important as formal academic standing.

How to apply:

  1. Complete the application HERE (2nd page of attachment)
  2. Submit your application to Ms. Falsetto by Friday, March 31st. The Byrne Creek Scholarship Committee will select our nominee.
  3. Once all of the applications are received, the Burnaby District Scholarship Committee will select the recipient.

Deadline is Friday, March 31, 2017.

$2500 David C. Lam/BC TEAL ESL Scholarship – deadline THIS Tuesday, January 31st

One scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding ESL student in BC.

Who is eligible to apply?

  • All ESL students living in British Columbia who are permanent residents or Canadian citizens
  • international students on student visas are not eligible for this award
  • the successful applicant may use the scholarship to register in any program being offered at a British Columbia post-secondary institution. British Columbia post -secondary institutions are defined as community colleges, vocational institutions and universities.

How to apply:

  1. A short description of the applicant’s life before coming to Canada
  2. A personal essay (original copy signed by the applicant):                                          a. Two pages in length, double-spaced, approximately 500 words
    b. Topic: How a post-secondary education will enable the applicant to make a positive contribution to Canadian society
  3. Two letters of reference:a. One from a teacher regarding academic performance
    b. One from an administrator, counsellor, coach, sponsor, or coordinator regarding service to others
  4. Documented proof of permanent residency of Canadian citizenship
  5. Grade 8 to Grade 11 transcripts, including records of all English language coursework
  6. Grade 12 program documentation with marks to date

$2500 TCF Refugee Award – deadline is THIS Tuesday, January 31st

[TCF] Refugee Award recognizes an adult or secondary student whose second language is English and who entered Canada as a refugee. It is for a refugee who has shown courage and determination while adapting to a new language and a new culture in Canada and wishes to study in a vocational or academic program at an educational institution in British Columbia.

How to apply:

  1. Provide documented proof of refugee status.
  2. Fully describe the vocational or academic program you are selecting.
  3. Provide reasons for applying for the TCF Refugee Award
  4. Describe any community or volunteer involvement in which you have participated.

$250 Scholarship for Grads who went to Seaforth Elementary School – deadline March 1st

Did you attend Seaforth Elementary School? If yes, this scholarship might be yours!

A successful candidate must be able to demonstrate how they provide leadership to younger members of the community as well as partnership with elder members in the same community. The student will demonstrate that a true leader guides those who need to know, while, at the same time, learns the value in the ability to follow and learn from others.

In a 500 word essay, the eligible students must demonstrate how they have exemplified these qualities. While we encourage all to apply, we are looking for students that have gone outside of the home or classroom to make a difference in the community and make this community a better place to live.

Please include a brief letter of support for this scholarship from a teacher or a school/community official.
