Our one-day conference will be held at the University of British Columbia, Point Grey campus, Robert H. Lee Building on February 10, 2018. This year’s conference is focused on Medical School and how to be a successful applicant. This is very useful for students considering health care as a future career option.  Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about Medical School from the Dean of UBC Medicine himself as well as admission and interview tips from the UBC Dean of Medical School Admissions. There will also be an opportunity for attendees to take part in hands-on workshops and case studies as well as a med student panel where they are free to ask questions.

OMS is an entirely student-run, non-profit organization, attendees are asked to pay a small fee of $30 to cover the cost of the venue and lunch. Online registration is now open but tickets are limited to 350. We will likely sell out as we have in the past three years so we encourage students to register early. The Law Society is inviting all BC Grade 12 students and any secondary school students who have taken, or are currently enrolled in Law 12 or Civic Studies 11, to submit an essay on the following topic:

How does social media interact with the rule of law?

The winning entry will be awarded a $1,000 prize, and the runner up will receive a $500 prize. The first place winner and runner up will be invited to an awards presentation event at the Law Society in Vancouver. Deadline for submissions is April 6, 2018.

The Rule of Law and Lawyer Independence Advisory Committee launched the annual essay contest in 2015 for BC secondary school students to reaffirm the significance of the rule of law and to enhance students’ knowledge and willingness to participate actively in civic life.

PURPOSE OF SCHOLARSHIP
In tribute to Rick’s life, the Crisis Centre is offering the Rick Blight Leadership in Action Scholarship for Athletes as a means to recognize the presence of mental wellness within athletics. Athleticism has the potential to be incredibly life promoting. It can also be competitive and prioritize physical wellness at the expense of mental and emotional well-being.  The Rick Blight Scholarship seeks to recognize athletes who have demonstrated both a dedication to leadership in their sport and an ongoing investment in their personal mental wellness and/or that of their sports team or community.

ELIGIBILITY

• A leader in your personal mental wellness and/or that of your sports team, or community;
• Demonstrating a dedication to your sport; and
• Currently enrolled in Grade 12 at a Lower Mainland/Sea-to-Sky Corridor high school.

Five scholarships valued at $1,000 will be awarded.  Award recipient will be asked to attend the Crisis Centre’s Annual General Meeting in East Vancouver in May 2018 to receive their scholarship. Recipient(s) may be asked to film a short video, provide a sound bite, or write a testimonial/blog post with us to raise awareness of the scholarship program and to highlight their contributions to mental wellness.

Deadline for applications is Friday March 2, 2018 at 5pm.

Post-Secondary Institutions (PSI) Nominations

The International Student Ambassador Scholarship for Post-Secondary Entry is for international students graduating from a B.C. public school, independent school, or certified offshore school and moving into a B.C. public post-secondary institutions or a degree program at authorized private degree granting institutions. B.C. school districts, independent schools, or certified offshore schools must nominate an international student and submit the application on the student’s behalf.

Selection Criteria

In order to be eligible to be nominated by a B.C. school district, independent school or certified offshore school, the international student must meet all of the following criteria:

• Be nominated by a B.C. school district, independent school or certified offshore school
• Be intending to enter a public post-secondary institution or a degree program at an authorized private degree granting institution (see NOTE below for list of eligible institutions)
• Hold a valid passport from one of the eligible categories above (Group 1, 2 or 3)
• Achieve a high academic standard, including English language ability

NOTE: Students entering programs at public post-secondary institutions and degree programs at authorized private degree-granting institutions in British Columbia are eligible for the PSI entry scholarship. Please consult the list of institutions and programs eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program in British Columbia to confirm your institution and intended program are eligible – institutions/programs on this list are the same as those eligible for the PSI entry scholarship.

Regular scholarship requirements:

• Must
 be currently enrolled in the final year of studies at a public secondary school in British Columbia
• Expected to graduate in June
• Good academic achievement – official school transcript of grades (to date) must be provided)
• Demonstrated exemplary service and leadership within the school and community (please provide 2 examples of service and 2 of leadership)
• 2 letters of reference affirming how the applicant has improved the quality of life for young people/others through volunteer work and/or other activities
• The application must be accompanied by a short, no more than one-page description of how volunteer service has made a difference in the life or lives of others
• Proof of application/entry to post-secondary
• A completed application form

The Cmolik Foundation awards scholarships to deserving BC students who have demonstrated good work ethic, tenacity and other commendable attributes in achieving their academic and social goals and who, without our support, may not have the means to attend a post secondary institution.  We look for students that have faced adversity, but through hard work and determination have been successful in achieving their goals.  Applicants must have been residents of BC for the past 7 years.

The Foundation will reimburse up to $35,000 for books and tuition leading to an undergraduate degree.  The maximum duration for funding is 5 consecutive years from the start of the student’s initial semester.  Reimbursements are paid in installments throughout the duration of the program provided the students meet the Foundation’s scholarship criteria.

Each school may put forth one student who they feel meet the criteria.  As a result, you must apply to the Byrne Creek Scholarship committee before Friday, February 9th. Once shortlisted, then you may apply directly to the Cmolik Foundation before February 15th.

How to apply:

The following information is to be submitted to the Student Selection Committee when applying for the scholarship:

1. Completed application form on their website HERE.

2. Two reference letters, one letter should be from a teacher or faculty member if currently in school. In the letter, the person you choose must verify the following:

• You require financial assistance to be able to attend a post-secondary institution.
• You have the ability academically and emotionally to succeed in a post-secondary educational environment.
• You are of good character.
• You demonstrate the tenacity to achieve your goals.
• They believe you will be a contributing member of society once you have achieved your educational goals.

3. Official transcript of Grade 12 and/or post secondary institution OR most recent report card

4. Current photograph

5. Letter from school stating that you are the student nominated to apply for the Cmolik Foundation scholarship from the school (Sample Cover Letter Template can be found under the Secondary School Resources tab)

The TCF Refugee Award recognizes a student who:

1. Entered Canada as a refugee
2. Completed Grade 12 or the equivalent
3. Studied English as an additional language since arriving in Canada
4. Wishes to study in a vocational or academic program at a post-secondary institution in British Columbia

Criteria

Applicants will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

1. Must be a Grade 12 or equivalent graduate who wishes to attend a BC post-secondary institution
2. Documented English language coursework at the secondary level
3. Documented school or community volunteer service
