Cover letter and application clarification for Burnaby District Scholarships- due on Monday

Hello Grads,
When you submit your applications on Monday, your cover letter to the Byrne Creek Scholarship Committee simply addresses the Byrne Creek Scholarship Committee and LISTS the scholarships for which you are applying.  Include your phone number and email address on this letter.  You only need ONE copy of this letter on top of ONE of your applications.
Please only use PAPERCLIPS on your package.  This saves A LOT of time when I make copies of your application for the committee(s).
Each scholarship package must include (and in this order):
•General Scholarship/AwardsApplication Form (found on our website)
•Specific Application form for EACH scholarship (found on our website)
– Example: BASES, Chad Turpin, Marlene Larson Scholarship…
– include all details that the specific application requires
•Financial need statement (if applicable)
– Do you live in a single-income home? Do you work part-time to help with family responsibilities? What is the nature of your parents’ job(s)? How will this money make an impact on your financial stress?
•Updated Resume
•Copy of your grade 11 and 12 transcripts (accessible through MyEd)
•Minimum of THREE reference letters to support community and school service
– Be sure to ask your reference to include the quality of your involvement, number of hours, dates, and any details of your involvement
•Include documentation like certificates, pictures of trophies or medals…
– copies of these recognitions boost your package
When you submit your application(s) on Monday to room B110, you will see a folder for each scholarship.  You will place your application in each applicable folder.  The Byrne Creek Scholarship Committee will finalize our nominees before Friday, April 5th.  The Burnaby District Scholarship Committee will finalize our winner before Friday, April 12th.  Winners will be notified before Friday, April 19th.

Update! Spirit of BC Scholarship not available to Byrne Creek Grads this year

The Spirit of BC Scholarships are awarded annually to graduates on a rotating school basis alphabetically.  Byrne Creek is not on the rotation this year.

If you were considering the Visual or Performing Arts Spirit of BC Scholarship, I encourage you to apply for the Michael J. Fox Scholarship or Burnaby Arts Council Scholarship.

If you were considering the Athletics Spirit of BC Scholarship, I encourage you to apply for the Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame (due April 15th) or BC School Sports (due May 6th).

The due date for all Burnaby District scholarships is earlier now.  They are due Monday, April 1st (no joke)! Check the powerpoint info presentation HERE for details on how to apply.  Please be sure to make sure to submit one complete application package for each scholarship for which you are applying.  Please submit your packages to Ms. Falsetto before 4:30pm.

In order to apply, you:

  • Awarded to youth who have faced adversity and have not only risen up against the odds, but are demonstrating a commitment to continue their education
  • Open to students who have faced challenges like poverty, health, family issues, personal loss and lack of support.
  • How does the application system work?  The Byrne Creek Scholarship Committee will select one candidate to represent our school

To be considered for the award the student must have:

  • successfully completed a Youth Train in Trades and Youth Work in Trades program in the Burnaby School District with a high level of effort, determination and integrity
  • successfully completed 120 hours industry-recognized work experience
  • demonstrated a high level of motivation to continue to develop skills and abilities in the chosen profession

  • Currently enrolled in a visual or performing arts course in a Burnaby secondary school.
  • Documentation to demonstrate your interest, dedication and aptitude in an arts or in multiple arts disciplines, e.g. dance, drama, music, visual art, theatre, script writing, stagecraft, directing, media arts.
  • Evidence of your financial need and an explanation of why there are no other financial resources available to you.

  • Your intent to pursue study at a post-secondary institution in an arts or arts-related area.

$1250 Royal Canadian Legion Scholarship for academics and leadership: Due April 30th

This Scholarship is to recognize those students who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in academics as well as leadership. To qualify for a Legion sponsored scholarship the applicant must meet the following criteria.

  Complete the attached application. Please use a pen and print clearly.

  Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (landed immigrant) at the time of registration in the school year for which the scholarship is awarded.

  Must be a BC resident.

  Must reside in South Burnaby.

  Must be finishing Grade 12 and have a minimum grade average of 80% (please provide transcript).

  Provide the name and address of the accredited College, Trade School, Technical School or University you will be attending.

  Plan to be a part-time or full-time student.

  Must be attending post secondary school the academic year following completion of your secondary education.

  Funds will be sent to the Institution directly on behalf of the student for post-secondary education.

  Demonstrate community involvement and leadership.

  Must not have received any other educational funding from any other Legion or Legion affiliate within Canada.

Want help writing scholarship applications? Free writing workshop Wednesday, March 13 at 6pm at Burnaby Central

Burnaby Central Secondary will be hosting a Scholarship Writing Workshop and Panel Discussion (#NSNWrites) in collaboration with National Student Network to discuss  key topics in preparing and writing scholarship and post-secondary entrance essays. The purpose of this workshop is to introduce high school students to various tools and provide student advice on how to compose a thoughtful and compelling essay that strongly reflects the students achievements and communication skills. Students will also be joined by skilled senior graduate and professional program students who will describe their experiences and share their insights in scholarly writing. The workshop is free of charge and students are encouraged to submit a writing sample to the NSN Editorial Team for feedback and comments.

Indo Canadian Business Association (ICBABC) Scholarships for academics, sports, and special needs: Due April 12th

Indo Canadian Business Association (ICBABC) Scholarship

This year, the Indo Canadian Business Association of British Columbia (ICBABC) is proudly celebrating its 20th Annual Student “Achievement Awards” Banquet on May 10, 2019 and it is with great pleasure that we once again extend an invitation to your students to apply.

Since its inception in 1992, ICBABC has been a non-profit organization that promotes networking within the Indo-Canadian business community. The Achievement Awards were introduced in 1997, and $400,000 in scholarships funds has been awarded to students across the lower mainland to date.

ICBABC is working with SFU for a Punjabi Language full credit course since 2016 and is committed to contributing a total of $30,000 to promote and expand the Punjabi Language and other cultural programs. ICBABC’s Annual Student Achievement Awards support outstanding students as they further pursue their academic endeavors within a post-secondary institution. The vision of the awards program is to invest in and develop strong leaders who demonstrate academic excellence, community involvement, a moral force of character, instincts to lead, and commitment to intellectual and personal development.

Each year, we receive a number of applications for these awards from exceptional students across British Columbia.

Up to $2,000 BCGEU Scholarships: Application is due April 28th

Applications for the 2019 BCGEU Scholarship program are now being accepted. The union will award $60,000 in scholarships to students in post-secondary education. Full-time scholarships are worth $2,000 and part-time scholarships are worth $1,000.

Applicants must be:
  • A BCGEU member; or related to a current, retired or deceased BCGEU member or staff[1], and
  • A current or prospective post-secondary or higher learning student enrolled, registered or planning to attend an eligible educational institution[2] in 2019.
In addition to personal information and details of your education plan, applicants will be asked to submit a 450 to 500-word essay on one of the following topics:
  1. How can unions lead the way on climate change?
  2. How can unions lead the way on reconciliation with Indigenous people and communities?
  3. How can unions lead the way on affordable housing?
We encourage applicants to base their essays on an interview with a BCGEU member, personal experience or original research. Applicants with an Individual Education Plan (IEP) may submit their essay as an audio or video file to scholarship@bcgeu.ca.

$500, $1000 United Croats of Canada Scholarships and Bursaries: Due May 1

The United Croats of Canada King Tomislav Branch Scholarships and Bursaries

The United Croats of Canada, King Tomislav Branch, is a nonprofit organization registered under the Societies Act of British Columbia. As one of its objectives the United Croats of Canada, King Tomislav Branch, contributes to the enhancement, and promotion of Croatian culture among the people of Croatian ancestry. This is partly manifested through the many activities of the Croatian Cultural Centre such as teaching folk dancing, music, and song; providing the Croatian language instruction; and other similar activities. In addition, The United Croats of Canada, King Tomislav Branch, has established a Scholarship and Bursary Fund. This fund is maintained by donations from the United Croats of Canada, King Tomislav Branch, and from the Croatian and broader communities. All charitable donations made by the public are income tax deductible. A receipt is issued by The United Croats of Canada, King Tomislav Branch, for this purpose.

Scholarships in the amounts of $500 and $1,000 are available for full time attendance either at a university, college, or a technical/vocational institute. In the event of a large number of qualified applications lesser amounts may be awarded. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit, involvement within the community and written essay. They are intended for initial post-secondary schooling and are not available for graduate work. All successful applicants will have previously demonstrated a capacity for high achievement. This will be established through the applicant’s school transcript, two written letters of reference from the applicant’s teacher(s) or school counselor, and a secondary letter may be from work, volunteer experience, or extracurricular activity, and a short essay on a topic chosen by the committee. Scholarships are normally provided for a term of one year or less. Applicants may reapply for a scholarship but if funds are limited preference will be given to students in their initial year of post-secondary schooling.

Applications are also available for downloading from the Centre’s website at www.croatiancentre.com (click on Croatian Services / scholarships).

Applications are accepted at any time of the year. However, completed applications should be received by May 1 to be considered for the fall term or semester.

Applicants will normally be advised by June 1 of the status of their applications. In some instances final decisions may not be made until government examination results are made available to the committee. Applications, though, may signify a start date other than the fall term or semester for the applicant’s school program. All completed applications should be sent to the Croatian Cultural Centre at the address above or e-mailed to scholarships@croatiancentre.com. All scholarship or bursary awards must be claimed by December 31st of the year in which it is awarded.
