February is a busy month. We are a week into Black History Month and heading towards Freedom to Read Week. I want you to take just a few minutes to reflect that unfortunately, this is not just history. Even today, there is a need for each of us to consider our role and responsibilities in this area. There are displays of books here at the Library Learning Commons. In the hallway cabinet, check out books that will aid you in becoming an anti-racist. Inside the library, find books about people who led the fight for civil rights. And then pick up a novel that tells a Black story by a Black author. Reading others’ stories help us begin to understand them.
And with Freedom to Read week coming, remember that several of the books you will find here have been challenged and/or banned in other places. Books that offend or make us uncomfortable are often the important ones.
