SIOP Component: Review and Assessment

Activity: Know/Don’t Know

Use this low prep, highly interactive activity to determine reading comprehension. This activity can be used in many different ways, but for purposes of reading assessment, here’s how you do it.

Directions:

Choose an article for the students to read.  Here’s a piece on scorpions that has been written at the grade 3 level, but can be used for all students gr. 3-12. SCORPIONS

Prior to reading: Use a simple organizer like the one below. In small groups, have students talk about what they know about the topic. Have them fill in the organizer.

Know

Don’t Know

What I learned

As the groups are discussing, the teacher quietly circulates and listens in on the conversations asking prompting/probing questions, modelling tier 2 words, etc. This is a good time to make notes on what the students already know.

Have students silently read the article on their own. After reading, discuss the article as a large group. You could start with what do you know now? Have the students use evidence from the text to support their answers. This teaches them to provide evidence.

Use: For formative reading assessment, as well as preview or review.
