Programs

The Burnaby Board of Education currently offers the following programs for advanced learners that offer support from elementary through the end of high school.

MACC (MULTI-AGE CLUSTER CLASS) PROGRAM

MACC is an interdisciplinary, inquiry-based program for high-ability learners seeking heightened cognitive and creative challenge in an inclusive and supportive community of intellectual peers. It serves students in Grades 4-7 and these students attend full-time at Capitol Hill Elementary or Suncrest Elementary. MACC provides enrichment for high-ability learners whose cognitive, personal and social skills may be developing at varying rates.

MINI SCHOOL AT ALPHA SECONDARY

The Mini School is an alternative, academic program for grades eight and nine students located at Alpha Secondary. It is designed to enrich, challenge and support students who have demonstrated high potential, talent and ability by providing them with complex cognitive and creative challenge in an inclusive and supportive environment of intellectual peers. This differentiated program offers an exciting and engaging learning environment designed to support students of high ability to reach their intellectual, personal and social potential.

AP (ADVANCED PLACEMENT) CAPSTONE PROGRAM

Located at Burnaby North and Burnaby South Secondary Schools, AP Capstone program was developed in response to feedback from higher education faculty and college admission officers. The program complements the in-depth, subject-specific rigor of AP courses and exams, allowing students to engage in the rigorous development of skills critical for success in college: inquiry, research, collaboration, and writing. This is aimed at students in Grades 11 and 12.
