BETA Mini School FAQ

APPLICATION PROCESS

Parents can put forth an application to the BETA Mini School Program for their child online from October 7th to November 7th, 2024.

Current Grade 7 MACC Students: Must submit an adapted application package, please see below.

Please read all of this page for important details about the application process, cognitive assessment, and selection process.

NOTE: All supporting documentation must be received by Thursday, November 7, 2024 for applications to be considered.

*BOTH Forms need to be completed. (*They do not have to be done in the same session.)

APPLICATION MUST INCLUDE:

Three most recent report cards
Copy of IEP or psycho-educational assessment, only if applicable
Out-of-district application for students not attending a Burnaby school – Please note that out-of-district applications will be accepted; however, priority will be given to Burnaby students.
Have your child attend an in-person portion during which they will also provide a writing sample. A time will be assigned to your child after applications have closed and all documentation is received. See below for more information.

COGNITIVE ASSESSMENT:

Parents will be notified of their child’s assessment date after the application deadline and upon receipt of all documentation required.

Children who attend school in Burnaby (SD41), and who have not already been assessed, will be assessed at their current homeschool sometime between November 25th and December 13th, 2024.
Children who attend a school outside of Burnaby (SD41) will be notified about the date, time and location of the assessment. Preliminary planning has the assessment set for December. Parents are responsible for transportation to and from the testing site. Due to space limitations, we ask that parents wait for their children at an off-site location.

The purpose of the screening assessment is to gain information regarding each candidate’s cognitive profile. This gives a snapshot of the student’s cognitive profile but is not a full psycho-educational assessment and the results should not be interpreted as such. We will be looking at the results as a screening tool in conjunction with information from the application package. No one criteria will determine a student’s admittance into the program.

SELECTION COMMITTEE:

Application materials will be reviewed by a selection committee composed of school-based and district staff. Applicants will be notified of program acceptance by February 27th, 2025 by email.

*DO NOT APPLY FOR CROSS CATCHMENT SCHOOL TRANSFER. Upon acceptance into a Mini School Program, the student will automatically be granted a school transfer.
