ADST 8-

All grade 8 students entering Burnaby South will explore all 3 areas of the Applied Design, Skills, and Technologies department via the ADST8 course.  Students will spend a third of the year, one term each, exploring content from the Business Education, Home Economics, and Technology Education  specialties

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP 8 – This is an applied skills course where grade 8 students will work in a computer lab for the duration of the term. With ever changing technology, this course will reinforce their elementary school level lessons of their digital citizenship responsibilities (cyber bullying, social media plagiarism); they will learn how to properly use computer programs that will assist the in their other courses; and they will gain general practical computer knowledge.

HOME EC 8-

Course Description

 Home Ec 8 is part of the grade 8 Applied Skills rotation. This is an introductory course to the wonderful world of Foods and Nutrition and Sewing and Textiles. The course is designed to provide you with some practical life skills.  You will learn to prepare basic baked goods, a breakfast, pizza and a rice dish.  You will also learn how to safely use a sewing machine and complete a fun sewing project that is yours to keep and enjoy!!   If you like to learn by doing and have an interest in cooking and sewing this course is for you!  As this is a practical course, attendance is absolutely necessary for success but otherwise there is very little homework provided time is well managed in class. This is designed to be a fun course where students can learn independent skills in a relaxed and social atmosphere.

 Evaluation:

 Students work primarily in partners during labs and individually for theory work and in the sewing lab. In class student evaluation is ongoing throughout the course with the focus being on practical lab work so attendance and punctuality are extremely important. End of term evaluation is based on completion of the assigned sewing project, active and cooperative participation in the foods labs and completion of all assigned theory work.

TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION 8 – This is an applied skills course in where grade 8 students will get a taste of everything that tech ed has to offer – Woodworking, metalworking, drafting and electronics. Throughout the few months in tech ed, these students will learn basic skills in each of the areas, exposing them to machines, tools, and practical knowledge.
