Have you ever wondered, “What should I study in university?” Mark off Saturday, July 24 in your calendars

SFU Speaker Series is here for you!

Have you wondered, “What should I study in university?” “What are my career options if I’m interested in STEM?” “What is university like?”

If you are a Grade 9-12 student and these questions are on your mind, then perhaps this is the right event for you! The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Speaker Series provides secondary school students with the opportunity to meet and interact with university students, faculty members, and/or working professionals in STEM fields.

During this event, our guest speakers will present and discuss their research and/or the work they do in their profession. They will also talk about their career path and what made them pursue the field they are in. Finally, there will be a Q&A session for students to ask questions and interact with our guest speakers. This speaker series is also open to the public as we want to encourage parents, guardians, and teachers to join us in supporting youths who are interested in pursuing post-secondary studies in these disciplines.

STEM Speaker Series: Environmental Science

July 24, 2021 (Saturday), 1:00-2:00 pm

Meet our speaker: Grayson Vanderbyl (she/her)

Service Administrator and Health and Safety Coordinator at Finning Canada Registered member of the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists (BIT). With nearly a decade of practical and theoretical knowledge of Canadian resource industries including mining, oil and gas, forestry, parks, and fisheries, I am dedicated to a career path preserving the environment while maintaining a healthy economy.

After attaining a diploma in Heavy Equipment Service Technology from GPRC in 2015, I went on to graduate with Honors from UNBC in 2020. I have a BSc for Natural Resource Management, specializing in Wildlife and Fisheries Science. Throughout my post-secondary education, I was awarded various grants and scholarships such as a USRA from NSERC (2019) to study heat transfer properties of fresh-water salmonids during their migration up the rivers from the ocean. I also held a position as a Teaching Assistant at UNBC in Introductory Biology (2019).

Growing up in the Yukon fishing, camping, hiking, gardening, mountain biking, and canoeing, I learned the importance of responsible harvest and proper management techniques to ensure that generations to come will enjoy the many benefits of our vast and beautiful country. Now working for Finning, a heavy equipment dealership, I am heavily involved in the mining community and maintaining a safe and healthy workplace for all our staff.
