What is Youth Train in Trade?

Youth train in trades is a one year program for high school students. Through this program, you can take courses that will give you both high school graduation credits and a level one technical training certification.

These programs are developed and offered as partnerships between school districts and post-secondary institutions, and classes are often taught at colleges. Local employers also get involved in the development of these programs, and students who complete these programs typically have very good success in finding employment.

Once you successfully complete a Youth train in trade program you will get credit for at least level one of the technical training (in-class) component of your Industry training Program. And through work experience placements that are usually part of the program, you will get credit towards the on-the-job component of your training as well. Or, enroll in both Youth train in trade and the Secondary School Apprenticeship program and you will be well on your way to completing your first year of post-secondary education by the time you graduate from high school.

Youth Work in Trades 

The Secondary School Apprenticeship Program provides grade 10, 11, and 12 students with a tremendous opportunity to receive a minimum of 480 hours of paid work and on-the-job training. An apprenticeship involves a formal agreement between a student, the Industry Training Authority (ITA) and an employer/union whereby the student learns current skills and knowledge associated with a trade or occupation under the supervision of a qualified journey person.
