Audio Plugin: Upload an .mp3 and Play Directly in Your Blog

February 10, 2012 in Audio Tools

Would you like to use audio recordings to provide instruction in your class or have students use it to demonstrate their learning?  Well now there is a plugin for that!  You can upload your audio recording in .mp3 format to your blog and insert it directly into a post or page.  You upload your audio like you would an image then click on the Audio Player Button, then click on Insert into Post.

The result will look like this in your Page/Post.

When you Publish it will look like this to your audience in the front-end of the blog.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

So whether you have your kids recording a response to a question, or you are reading a passage in a language class, you can quickly add that content to your blog.  Let me know how it works, or email me for help.

WordPress App for your Iphone/Ipad or Android phone

December 8, 2011 in Blog Tools, News

If you have an iPhone, iPad or Android phone/tablet, you can stay connected to your blog with the WordPress App.  Search the store (itunes, market) for your respective device for the free WordPress App.  Once you have it downloaded and installed it you will need to do the following:

  1. Log into your blog on the computer.  In the Dashboard, click on the Settings Menu and then on the Writing menu item.
  2. In the Writing settings enable the Remote Publishing feature by checking off the XML – RPC checkbox
  3. Click on the Save Changes button.
  4. Now on your mobile device, you will need to provide 3 pieces of information for the WordPress App.
  • the path to your blog.  It would look like this, http://blogs.sd41.bc.ca/[you blog site which is usually lastname+first initial]
  • your username
  • your password

That’s it.  You should be connected and be able to review and add posts and comments.  Let us know how it worked for you.

New Themes: Changing how your blog looks and acts!

November 21, 2011 in News

In a blog, content may be king, but it is sure nice to have it dressed up a little.  That’s where themes come in!  In the Appearance menu, you can activate a theme to make your blog follow a pre-designed look.  The theme will determine colours, font styles, format and layout.  But some themes can add brand new functionality.  Some of these extras include features like a slideshow, special widget locations, or dropdown menus.  Themes can also have a number of customizable options.  A popular custom option is the ability to change the image in the header of your blog.  We have 41 themes in the SD41 Blogs right now and we hope to have that up to 75 by the end of the month.  Try them out and comment on your favourite. If you would like me to add one that you’ve seen or used before let me know.

Student Blogging Guidelines

October 14, 2011 in News

Its great to see so many staff creating blogs for their classroom communities.  A next step for your blog might be to include students directly as registered members.  This would allow them to leave comments and respond to posts you create.  As a blog administrator, you would be able to verify and moderate your students’ comments by knowing their registered username.  But creating an open line of communication with your students does come with some responsibility.  What they write on the blog can be very powerful, both in a positive and negative way.  So with any school activity, there should be some rules and guidelines that model the type of communication that we expect from our students.  The blog is part of your class.  Here are some guidelines that we would expect your class understands before you apply to have your class registered in your blog.  Email me and let me know you are interested in adding your class into your blog and if you need support in understanding the guidelines and good practice.  Lucky.Saini@sd41.bc.ca

Student Blogging Guidelines

Publishing thoughts and ideas on the internet is a very public activity. Publishing as part of a blog is a classroom activity so you should not write anything that you would not say or write in your regular classroom.

Five Blogging Rules

Be safe

  • Anyone can access the Internet and view what you write on a blog. Your page is ‘protected’ but there is nothing to stop people from copying your material and placing it elsewhere on the web.
  • Protect your privacy. Use your given username and do not post pictures of yourself.
  • Keep all personal information to yourself.

Be mindful of what you say

  • You are responsible for anything that is posted in your username.
  • Use appropriate language (e.g. limit your use of text speak or netlingo).
  • Follow writing conventions including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Try not to generalize your sentences. Avoid the use of “All” and “Everyone”.
  • How you say something is as important as what you say.
  • Could you be misunderstood? Be clear in the message you are trying to convey.
  • Images inserted into a blog must be related to the context of the message and follow copyright rules.

Be respectful to others

  • Blogs are about ideas – agree or disagree with an idea, NOT the person. Freedom of speech does not give you the right to be rude.
  • When responding, try giving two stars and a wish (two positive comments and one thing you think could improve).
  • Use evidence to support your position and make sure what you write is fair and accurate.

Be informative

  • Write about and present what you know. Make sure you get your facts straight and ask for advice if you are not sure.
  • Linking to web sites from your blog or blog comments in support of your argument is an excellent idea. You are responsible for checking the accuracy of the information you post online.
  • Respect copyright. It’s customary in the blogosphere to cite sources by linking to them within blog posts, and it’s recommended that you do so.

Be interesting

  • One way to do this is to expand on others ideas. You can quote other people’s work, link back to it and add your own thoughts or opinions to their ideas.
  • Make it interesting and fun so that you will encourage your readers and listeners to come back for more. There’s no point in blogging if people don’t read or listen to what you say.

New and Improved Blog Server

September 13, 2011 in News

Thank you for your patience with the Blog server upgrade. You can now access your blog but there were a few things that did not transfer perfectly.

1. All custom links need to re-added.
2. Categories need to be rebuilt.

3. Unused widgets and custom widgets need to be re-organized.
a. Click on Appearance
b. Select the Widget(s) desired and add to location

4. Reset General Settings where necessary:
a. Retype the name of your blog; retype the subtitle; set the timezone (-7).

5. In your blog’s theme, you may have to replace the graphic in the header.
a. Click on Appearance, Header, then upload the graphic

We apologize for the disruption this has caused, but the Learning Technologies Team felt that these changes were necessary to support further expansion of the tool to support communication, professional social networking and student learning. Please visit the Staff Development Calendar http://blogs.sd41.bc.ca/staffdevelopmentcalendar for online tutorials.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me Lucky.Saini@sd41.bc.ca.
