This week we explore the poetic device: METAPHOR

TASK 1: Look at these examples of metaphor.  How are these different than similes?

TASK 2: Watch this video to learn and explore the difference:

Difference Between Simile and Metaphor (with Examples and ...

TASK 3: Think about some common metaphors that you have heard in conversations, songs, books, etc.  For example, “all the world is a stage”.   “She is a real ham”.

“‘Cause, baby, you‘re a firework
Come on, show ’em what you‘re worth” (Katy Perry).

My favourite metaphor is from the song that I sang to my son when he was a baby.  “You are my sunshine”.

Metaphor and Symbolism Explained - Nikki V. Photo Blog

Discuss with someone:

  1. Why do you think we use metaphors in conversation, songs, books, etc.?
  2. Do metaphors make understanding easier or hardier?  (ex. think about someone learning English for the first time)

Task 4: Open the attached PDF file and identify if each sentence contains a simile or a metaphor.

simile-or-metaphor (1)

Task 5: write a metaphor and a simile to describe something in everyday life that demonstrates that you understand the difference between the two devices. You must use the same everyday thing for the simile AND metaphor.

For example:

Simile: The sun glistened like a diamond in the sky.

Metaphor: You are the sun in my sky!

Simile:  The class was as noisy as a zoo!

Metaphor: It was a zoo today at the mall!

Task 6:

Find an example of metaphor in a print resource.  This can be a book, a newspaper, a magazine, any PRINT material.  It cannot be from an online source.  Take a picture or recopy the metaphor.  If you recopy the metaphor, you need to include where you copied it from (that is which book, magazine, etc.).  Then, explain what the metaphor means and why it is a powerful one. Your work should include the quote, phrase or photo of the metaphor and a 4-5 sentence explanation.

EXAMPLE OF WEEK 5 FINAL PRODUCT:

This is my example of metaphor.  It is the cover page and title of a very fun book by Stu Smith.  “My school’s a zoo”.  This metaphor is saying that like a zoo, the school is noisy, busy and at times savage!  It is a powerful metaphor because children can sometimes become unruly and wild and animals are the epitome (prime example) of something wild.
