The Intermediate Choir Festival, now in its 31st year, is a district-wide choral event that takes place each spring. Elementary choirs along with one secondary choir perform before a commentator who gives feedback about their performance. This festival provides choirs with a wonderful end of year performance opportunity and hone their choral skills in a collaborative and encouraging setting.

Samara Bortz is an active conductor, singer, and music educator in the Vancouver area. She is the founder and artistic director of Crescent Choirs, a White Rock-based family of community choirs with ensembles for children, youth, and adults. Beginning in January of 2017 with a twenty-five voice women’s choir, Crescent Choirs has grown into an organization of six different ensembles with more than 150 singers across all ages and levels. Samara is also currently an assistant conductor for EnChor Choir under the tutelage of Morna Edmundson. Samara is known for creating a rehearsal atmosphere that allows her singers to grow as musicians, as well as empathetic community members and confident leaders. As a conductor, she is committed to creating choral artistry while embracing the joyful human connection that comes from singing with others. In addition to her work with Crescent Choirs, Samara has a studio of private voice students in the White Rock & South Surrey area. She has previously taught singing at the Sarah McLachlan School of Music and worked for four years at Cornerstone Montessori School, teaching music to the Kindergarten – Grade 7 classes. Samara holds a Bachelor of Music in voice performance from Mount Allison University and a Master of Arts in historical musicology from UBC. In 2018, Samara completed a Master of Music degree in choral conducting at UBC, where she directed the UBC Men’s Choir and UBC Chamber Choir. In the past, Samara has sung with UBC’s University Singers and Vancouver-based Phoenix Chamber Choir, under the direction of Dr. Graeme Langager. With these acclaimed ensembles, she has traveled to perform in international festivals in London and Ireland, as well as at Podium, Canada’s choral conference and festival. For the past two years, Samara has enjoyed singing with Crescent Choirs’ young adult ensemble, Aurora Chamber Choir, under the direction of her husband, Andrew Bortz.
