These courses have similar focus on content and skills as our regular English courses, but also emphasize language instruction. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grade 8s take <\/span><b>English Language Development 8<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grade 9s take <\/span><b>English Language Development 9<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grades 10-12 ELL 3s take <\/span><b>English 10 Language Adapted<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Literary Studies and Composition)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>English 11\/12 Semestered<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">English language learners who have successfully completed English 10 Language Adapted, and are in their graduation year, are eligible to enroll in English 11\/12 Semestered. This course combines English 11 (Composition) and English Studies 12. Students will meet every day to complete these two courses, which are required for high school graduation. All content and skills for Composition 11 and English Studies 12 will be included in this course, with a special emphasis on language development. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students must also enroll in <strong>Academic Writing for English Language Learners 11<\/strong> to support their success in this course. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Academic Writing for English Language Learners 11<\/b><\/p>\n<div>Academic Writing 11 is a course designed to support students taking regular English 11 and 12 who want to improve their writing skills, build vocabulary, expand their knowledge of various genres of writing in academic English, and improve their editing skills.\u00a0 These are students for whom\u00a0<b>English is a second or additional language<\/b>, and who test at least at a Level 3 on Burnaby intake assessment rubrics, or at a minimum \u201cConsolidating\u201d on the BC Ministry of Education ELL Standards.\u00a0 The course content of AW 11 is independent from regular English 11\/12 but is designed to support and complement the writing tasks of regular English.\u00a0 To accomplish this, the course focuses on the register, diction, and syntax most commonly found BC high school academic genres including, but not limited to response genres, expository genres, information texts, and narrative essays.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>English Classes for English Language Learners at Burnaby South English Language Development At Burnaby South, ELL 3 students develop their academic English skills by taking special Language Development courses.
